D230 Approves $1.7 Million in School Renovations

The Consolidated High School District 230 board also gave the go ahead for IDOT to buy land to then widen LaGrange Road, which is expected to begin later this year.

The Consolidated High School District 230 Board of Trustees unanimously approved a 15-item list of repairs, updates and renovations for all three high schools during the March 20 meeting.

A total of $1,717,000 worth of repairs were green lighted for Chicago-based Poulos, Inc., which was the lowest bid out of eight, according to school district documents. The repairs include main office alterations and asbestos removal at Stagg, media center alterations on both the first and second floors at Andrew, tennis court resurfacing and cashier’s office alterations at Sandburg, and new gym floors installed at both Stagg and Sandburg.

The board also approved selling land along LaGrange Road and 131st Street for about $410,000 to the Illinois Department of Transportation for the upcoming widening project expected to begin later in the year.

D230 spokeswoman Carla Erdey said the land isn’t used for curricular or co-curricular activities, and is landscaped along the two roads.

“The agreement includes the purchase of the land and reimbursement for the associated landscaping and signage,” Erdey said.

District trustees held off on voting on a bus service for special education students, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Prior to the meeting, the district decided to open up special education bussing, with two companies returning bids. American School Bus Co. submitted a bid for $2,531,000, while Sunrise Southwest offered a bid of $2,892,000. Lowest cost will not be the only consideration in the selection process, according to district documents.

The bidder “most able to provide safety and comfort for pupils with special needs or disabilities” is the new standard, according to the district.
