State Report Card: See How Orland Schools Rank

Public elementary and middle schools in Orland Park and Orland Hills saw their Illinois State Achievement Test scores fall under a new set of standards that went into effect in January.

The Illinois State Board of Education recently released its report card for every public school throughout the state, and a vast majority of schools saw test scores fall under new standards.

Of the schools ranked in the report card, 600 passed while 3,169 were "deemed failures," according to a Daily Herald analysis of the State Report Card.
This year, the state made a move to raise expectations — or cut scores — for the ISATs, which is given to third- through eighth-grade students. The move was meant to help "align with the more rigorous Common Core Learning Standards and give a better indication of college and career readiness," according to an ISBE press release.

The report card does include what districts’ scores would have been had the former standards continued. As a baseline, the state had 59 percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations under the new standards in 2013, whereas under the old standards 83 percent of students tested met or exceeded expectations on the ISAT.

The report also includes what percentages would have been if the new standards were applied in 2012, to better gauge where how a school performed compared to the year before. The state had 59 percent of students meeting and exceeding both in 2012 and 2013 under the new standards.

Orland School District 135

District 135 saw the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards fall from 93 percent in 2012 under the old standards, to 76 percent in 2013 under the new standards.

However, with the new standard applied to 2012 scores, D135 saw a substantially smaller drop. Under the new standards, D135 fell one percent between 2012 and 2013, going from 77 percent of students tested meeting and exceeding to 76 percent.

Community Consolidated School District 146

District 146 also saw a drop under the new standards, going from 88 percent meeting and exceeding in 2012 to 67 percent in 2013. But D146 saw no percentage change at all if the standards are applied to 2012 scores, with 67 percent for last year under the new standards.
