SMS Art Teacher Travels to Connecticut and Learns Ancient Painting Techniques
St. Michael Institute of Sacred Art is a ministry of St. Edmund’s retreat. The mission is to preserve and promote the highest standards of excellence in the sacred arts in service to Jesus Christ and his church. St. Michael School's art teacher, Mrs. Carlin Marie Glennon attended a workshop/retreat last April at St. Edmunds retreat center on Ender Island in Connecticut focusing on sacred art. Her class was called “Illuminated Letters of Rassu on Vellum”. Angelo Rassu was a gifted calligrapher and engrosser whose collection of work is kept on the island. Calfskin vellum was prepared to become the base of a painting of a letter, just as in ancient manuscript illumination. Ancient painting techniques using gouache were used and age old ways of applying crushed colablt, gold leaf, and shell gold were learned as well. The instructor, Harvest Crittenden, is one of 11 Master Penmen in the world and has worked for such clients as the White House, the Emperor of Japan and the Prince of Wales.
