Athlete of the Week: Muys Helps Sandburg Secure State Title

Andrew Muys' clutch play in the postseason sparked the Eagles to their fourth boys volleyball state championship.

Sandburg’s Andrew Muys played his final volleyball match on his home court on Tuesday night against Marist, and he certainly made his presence felt.

He finished play that night with eight kills and four blocks. It was his kill at the end of game one that gave his team a shot of adrenaline, as That gave the Eagles a sectional championship, and it helped send them on their way to their fourth state title, which they secured Saturday.

"In that first game (against Marist), I wasn't hitting well,” Muys said. “On that last point, I just thought to go and swing at it. I did, and we won.”

Muys' block drew praise from the opposing coach.

"That hit from the back row in a 24-23 game was huge. It was a hell of a swing by that kid,” Marist coach Bob St. Leger said. “Ninety-nine out of 100 kids in the state are going to hit that ball either out of bounds or into the net the way he swung at that ball, but he got it down."
