Athlete of the Week: Sandburg Volleyball Freshman Digs a Good 'Knight' of Work

Because of her work in the back row, Sandburg freshman defensive specialist Sami Knight has elevated the Eagles' volleyball game.

Yes, Sandburg volleyball player Sami Knight is a freshman. But, already, she is playing like an upperclassmen on an Eagles squad that boasts a bunch of young talent.

Sophomores Nicole Bing, Meghan Hutchinson, Kelly Findlay and Bridget Lebert also have helped Sandburg race out of the starting blocks this season in fine fashion.

Knight's play was outstanding in Sandburg's 25-21, 25-14 victory over Lincoln-Way West on Tuesday. A setter and defensive specialist, she dished out 11 assists and had three service aces in the victory.

Knight followed up with another big effort in Sandburg's 20-25, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Lincoln-Way North on Thursday. The Eagles rallied from a 20-15 deficit in Game 3.

Sandburg scored six straight points to grab a 21-20. Sideouts on both sides of the net put Knight on the serving line. She scored the winning points to cap the Eagles' improbable comeback. And, for her work, she is honored today as the Patch Athlete of the Week in Orland Park.
