Boys Basketball: Sandburg Finishes Regular Season with Road Win

Sandburg 49 Joliet West 41: Eagles' height and physical play too much for Steelmen to overcome.

The Hot Read: Sandburg’s height and physical play dominated during a 49-41 road win over Joliet Township in the SouthWest Suburban Conference finale for both schools Friday night.  

Patch’s MVP: Jason Viane scored nine of his 15 points in the second half, including a pair of three-pointers.

Fit to be Tied: Sandburg never trailed. There were just two ties — 4-4 and 29-29 late in the third quarter. Sandburg went on an 8-2 run to close the quarter and take a 37-31 lead into the final stanza.

Sandburg’s Leaders: Jason Viane (15 points), Ken Payonk (9 points) and Brian Dace (8 points).

Joliet West’s Leaders: Brandon Tyson (17 points), Remy Roberts-Burnett (13 points) and Brian Edwards (6 points).

Dunk You Very Much: Back-to-back steals and dunks by Edwards and Roberts-Burnett brought the crowd to its feet and cut the lead to 16-14 with 5:28 to play in the second quarter.

Quotable I: Sandburg coach Todd Allen: “Our guys kept their composure and this was a good road win for us to finish out the season.”

Quotable II: Joliet West coach Luke Yaklich: “The tougher more physical team won today. Their ability to take our athleticism away with their physical play dictated the entire flow of the game.”

Records: Sandburg won 11 of its last 15 games to finish the regular season 17-9 overall and 8-5 in the SWSC. Joliet Township is 9-5, 5-9 heading into the state series.

What’s Next: No. 8 Sandburg faces No. 9 Lincoln-Way East for the third time this year in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North regional semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Frankfort. No. 14 Joliet West takes on No. 18 Marian Catholic in the first round of the Class 4A Plainfield Central regional at 6 p.m. Monday in Plainfield.
