Cross Country: Sandburg Boys Finish 7th in State

Pat McMahon leads the way for the Eagles in Saturday's state finals in Peoria. Lincoln-Way East is the highest-finishing girls team from our area.

’s boys cross country team finished seventh in Saturday’s Class 3A state finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

Sandburg compiled a team score of 263 to finish behind Palantine (114), O’Fallon (120), Neuqua Valley (144), York (151), Buffalo Grove (191) and Prospect (242).

Sandburg’s top finisher was junior Pat McMahon, who was 32nd overall with a time of 15:06.

Mitch Rees finished 76th (15:27), Derek Hevel was 79th (15:28), Jimmy Panozzo was 83rd (15:28) and Mike Borstel was 86th (15:29) for Sandburg.

New Trier’s Leland Later won the race with a time of 14:17.

Among the other south suburban Patch boys teams competing in Class 3A, finished in 25th place, led by sophomore Chris Kaminski in 116th (15:42).

Other individual finishers from the Southland were senior Dan Caddigan in 46th place (15:15), senior Eric Lindelsee in 65th (15:22) and Andrew senior Mike Keller in 110th (15:38).

GIRLS CLASS 3A

finished 25th and Lincoln-Way Central was 26th in the girls Class 3A race, which was won by New Trier.

The top area individual finisher was junior Moira McDermott, who finished 90th with a time of 18:26.

BOYS CLASS 2A

Belividere North won the team title, finishing ahead of Glenbard South and Normal University.

senior Brandon Ivins finished 120th with a time of 16:24, and senior Brandon Ceh finished 141st (16:32).

GIRLS CLASS 2A

Yorkville won the team title, followed by Crystal Lake Central and Montini. Crystal Lake Central freshman Sami Staples won the race with a time of 17:07.

freshman Natalie Waters finished 31st with a time of 18:15

BOYS CLASS 1A

Mt. Zion won the team title, followed by Unity (Tolono) and Monticello. Monticello senior Steve Schroeder won the individual title with a time of 14:28.

GIRLS CLASS 1A

St. Teresa (Decatur) won team title, followed by Westmont and Monticello. St. Joseph-Ogden senior Chelsea Blaase won the race with a time of 17:12.
