Eagles Defensive End Cody Cummings Bids to Make Most of His Last Hurrah

Sandburg senior knows his days on the gridiron are numbered.

Cody Cummings has played football since he was old enough to walk.

Now, his days on the gridiron are numbered. He has entered his last season as a senior defensive end for the Sandburg Eagles. And he is approaching each game like it could be his last. He takes nothing for granted.

"I'm looking forward to all our games," Cummings said. "They're all going to be big games, not any specific ones."

So far, Cummings' focused attitude has paid off. The Eagles are 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Southwest Suburban Blue Conference, their only loss a 29-24 setback to Homewood-Flossmoor on the opening night of conference play.

The Eagles will take on another conference rival -- Lincoln-Way Central -- on Friday night and will look to inch closer toward gaining a state playoff berth.

"We're going to be very good," Cummings said. "We've been working hard all summer and in our practices."

Last year, Sandburg went 7-4, losing in the second round of the IHSA playoffs to Glenbard North. Coach Dave Wierzal said that the Eagles want to realize their dream of bringing home a state championship this season.

Cummings believes there is only one way to achieve that goal.

"(We need) to take every game, win every game, so we can make the playoffs," he said.
