Hoops: These Boys are Flying High

Sports Editor Ron Kremer ranks the region's top boys basketball teams from 1-5, plus the five knocking on the door.

1. Homewood-Flossmoor (17-5): Vikings make a three-of-a-kind play in 59-49 victory over Lincoln-Way East. Julian Lewis, Tyrone Sherman and Delvon Rencher each scored 12 points. Next: Tonight vs. Bolingbrook.

2. Stagg (18-5): Big Two: Dan Ahern and Darius Draper. Two on the rise: Sean Dwyer and Brett Kaiser. No wonder Chargers are charging. Next: Tonight at Thornridge.

3. Bloom (14-7): LeJavious Johnson scored 21 points, but the Blazing Trojans dropped a 52-51 decision to Rich East and fell from the unbeaten ranks in the Southland Athletic Conference. Next: Tonight vs. Rich South.

4. Brother Rice (15-7): Garrett O’Neill scored 17 points in a 36-32 victory over Marian Catholic. Alex Majewski added 13. Next: Tonight at Kankakee Bishop McNamara.

5. Sandburg (14-8): The Eagles dumped Joliet Central 67-55 behind the play of Brian Dace (19 points) and Kenny Payonk (16 points). And, with all their youth, the future looks bright. Next: Tonight at Lincoln-Way East.
