Saint Xavier Football Ranked No. 2 in Nation

Another big season is expected from a program that has been among the best in NAIA play in recent years.

The Cougars are expected to be a powerhouse again this year. According to a SouthtownStar article, the Cougars are right where they want to be with their No. 2 national ranking. They will open the season at home on Saturday at 6 p.m., hosting Olivet Nazarene.

The Cougars men's soccer team also received NAIA Top 25 honors, coming in at No. 25 in the rankings, according to the school's athletics site.

Sandburg Alum Gets Conference Honors

Brett Velon finished his senior season at Robert Morris University with plenty of baseball honors. Velon earned Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors and was an NAIA All-American, according to the SouthtownStar.

Velon had impressive 2011 totals, with a batting average of .432, 72 RBIs, 19 doubles, 10 triples and eight home runs.

Strong Start for Sandburg Golf Teams

Sandburg's varsity golf team has started the season 3-0. Angela Wojtczak scored a 43 and Frankie Saban had a 45 to lead the Eagles to their 185-234 victory over Lincoln-Way Central on Wednesday. Wojtczak shot a 1-over-par 36 in Sandburg's 175-180 victory over Andrew on Thursday.

On the boys side, the Eagles (3-1) defeated Lincoln-Way West 153-164 on Thursday at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park. Sandburg was led by Mike Misheck with a 1-over-par 36 and Luke Ostrom with a 2-over-par 37.

Sandburg Drops Soccer Opener

The Eagles had not one but two goals overturned by officials on Wednesday at Lyons Township. After allowing a goal early in the first half, the setbacks were too much for the Eagles, who lost 1-0 to open the season. The Eagles returned to action on Saturday against Maine South and played to a scoreless draw.
