Sandburg Boys Grab Water Polo Title

Eagles take care of business against Lincoln-Way Central, Homewood-Flossmoor.

In the final week of the regular season, the Sandburg boys water polo team needed just one more conference win to wrap up the SWSC Blue title.

And the Eagles did one better than that.

Sandburg notched a 14-4 victory over Lincoln-Way Central on Monday that clinched a share of the crown for the Eagles. But there was still one team standing between Sandburg and sole possession of some new hardware.

Homewood-Flossmoor came in on Wednesday with a chance to gain a share of the conference title, as the teams each had one conference loss going in, but the Eagle attack put them away 10-4. Sandburg wrapped up the week with a non-conference match against Naperville Central, which Naperville Central took 8-4. The Eagles head into sectional play with a record of 25-5 overall and 12-1 in the SWSC Blue.

Meanwhile, on the girls' side, the Eagles fell on Monday in an overtime thriller against Lincoln-Way Central 16-15. The Eagles also came up on the short end of an 8-4 loss against H-F to wrap up conference play at 9-4. Sandburg defeated Neuqua Valley 11-4 on Tuesday. The Eagles headed into the weekend with an overall record of 20-8.

Eagles, Fully Mended, Roll over SWSC Opponents

In boys volleyball, Lincoln-Way North hosted Sandburg in Frankfort. On Monday, the Eagles handed them the Phoenix their first conference loss (25-16, 25-15). The Eagles continued to roll over conference competition with a win on Wednesday against Joliet Central (21-12, 21-8). Kenny Payonk had four kills and three blocks, while Danny Boyle finished with 11 digs. Scott Fifer, who was back from a March knee injury, and Nick Bendell each contributed 11 assists in the victory over the Steelmen. The Eagles also put away Lincoln-Way West 25-23, 25-16 to improve to 22-3 and 7-0 in the Southwest Suburban Blue. 

Softball Still Undefeated in SWSC

With all of last week's rainouts, the Sandburg softball team has been playing a game nearly every day this week, but the hectic schedule didn't phase the defending state champs. The week started with a against Lincoln-Way East on Monday behind the pitching of Lora Olson. The Eagles cashed in on a leadoff walk in the home half of the first and never looked back. On Wednesday, the Eagles headed to Homewood-Flossmoor to take on a very good Vikings team. The Eagles came out as 11-1 victors and sat at 6-0 in the SWSC Blue headed into the weekend.

Badminton Sectionals: Wagner Does it Again

Last year, to win the individual sectional title, Katie Wagner had to defeat a teammate. It was the same this year, as she defeated Kara Kentner for her second sectional crown. The Eagles won the sectional and are sending six individuals to the state tournament. Wagner and Kentner qulaified as singles. The doubles teams of Carolyn Brown and Rachel Allen and  Vicky Gugala and Alexis Andrew also will make the trip.

Eagle Baseball Wins Two

Sandburg's baseball team was back in action. The Eagles returned to the diamond on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Richards. Mike Krzus pitched five innings of one-hit ball. Joe Merino picked up the win in relief. Bill Cronin drove in the go-ahead run and Nick Bates drove in another with a double. Zack Reks went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

With a 10-0 win Thursday over Joliet Central, the Eagles swept their season series against the Steelmen. Matt Farrington pitched four shutout innings to record his first conference win of the season. Reks and Dan Rizzie each hit home runs.The Eagles were 10-5 and 5-1 heading into weekend action.

Wrestling With the Mind for a Good Cause

Sandburg senior wrestler Kevin Katalinic not only won 19 matches for the Eagles, but he devised a plan to help others win in life. The Chicago Tribune profiled Katalinic's desire to give back to the community and the world.
