Sandburg Places 3rd in IHSA Boys Water Polo State Tournament
Matt Veldman scored four goals and chipped in three assists as Sandburg defeated Lockport 10-4 to place third in the IHSA boys state water polo tournament Saturday in Lincolnshire.
After dropping a heart-breaker in the semifinals, Sandburg rebounded to defeat rival Lockport 10-4 as the Eagles placed third in the IHSA boys state water polo tournament Saturday at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire.
Matt Veldman scored 4 goals and racked up three assists to lead Sandburg (29-7). Kevin Tunney and Mike O'Malley each chipped in two goals. Anthony Bonnar and Stephen Zieler also scored.
Eagle goaltender Matt Malecki was credited with 11 saves.

Sandburg earlier dropped a 12-11 decision to top-ranked Lyons Township in the semifinals. Lyons went on to defeat Loyola Academy 14-6 as the Lions took home the state championship trophy.
The Eagles placed fourth in 2011, second in 2009 and fourth in 2008. Their victory over Lockport was coach Jim Caliendo's 400th. He has coached at Sandburg for 19 years.
