Update: And the Winner in Patch Athlete of the Week Voting is ...

Evergreen Park wrestling standout Jesse McLain outpolled six others in voting for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 8-14. He is now eligible for January Patch Athlete of the Month recognition.

The candidates were:

Andrew Byland, junior, boys bowling, Richards. Byland powered Richards tot the team title in the South Suburban Red bowling tournament. He had a six-game series total of 1,448.

Jesse McLain, senior, wrestling, Evergreen Park. McLain won the 126-pound championship at the Lisle Invitational and led the Mustangs to a sixth-place finish with 84.5 points. McLain defeated Lisle’s Ryan Kilroy 6-0 in the title match and pushed his record to 17-2.

Casey McMahon, sophomore, guard, girls basketball, Stagg. McMahon was Miss Clutch in the Chargers’ 59-58 victory over Thornwood. She was fouled with no time on the clock and hit three free throws to rally Stagg from a 58-56 deficit. McMahon finished with 19 points.

Daryle Morgan, junior, forward, boys basketball, Lincoln-Way North. Morgan posed double trouble in North’s 64-47 victory over district rival Lincoln-Way West. He put up a double-double (19 points and 14 rebounds) in a show of his all-around game.

Jeff Nichols, junior, boys bowling, Tinley Park. Nichols rolled a six-game series of 1,342 and captured medalist honors in the South Suburban Red Conference tournament at Centennial Lanes. He led the Titans to their first varsity boys bowling conference team title.

Rashaan Surles, junior, guard, boys basketball, Homewood-Flossmoor. Surles scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter of the Vikings’ 45-36 victory over Sandburg in Orland Park. He zoned out the noise from a hostile crowd and hit 5-of-6 free throws during the stretch.

Matt Veldman, senior, boys swimming, Sandburg. Veldman was the driving force behind three winning relay teams as the Eagles flew to the title in the 13-team Gillberg Invitational with 318 points. He teamed with Michael O’Malley, Anthony Bonnar and Stan Grotkiewicz for a clocking of 1:27.67 in the 200 free relay.
