HIGH POINT STUDENTS "Choose Kind"

Fourth grade students of High Point School recently completed reading the novel, "Wonder." Read more on how their teacher, Mrs. Kenny presented the book's theme of accepting others and Choose Kind with a special guest speaker and class project

The fourth grade class of Mrs. Kenny recently completed reading the novel Wonder, by RJ Palacio discussing the book’s themes of empathy and kindness.  In the spirit of “Choosing Kind,” the class received a special visit from an inspirational two year-old girl named Mary Cate, and her mother, Kerry Lynch. Mary Cate was born with Apert Syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting the shape and growth of the head, hands and feet. Mary Cate’s mother shared an inspiring video of the medical trials Mary Cate has endured but more importantly how she and her family have persevered with the empathy and kindness of others.

After completing the book, each student wrote how they would “Choose Kind”, and read aloud what actions they would do to practice this in their daily lives. They also created bookmarks that read, “When given the choice between being right and being kind, Choose Kind.”

Inspired by Mary Cate’s resilient spirit, Mrs. Kenny also planned a special project for the class to perform and give back to the community. The class created hand-made Valentines with Mary Cate that would be donated to the children of Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn.

The novel Wonder tells the story of a young boy named August Pullman who was born with a cranial facial difference that prevented him from attending a regular school. Now August starts fifth grade at the local school and wants to be treated like the other students.
