Village Announces Trash Cart Deliveries & Curbside Fall Clean Up Week

Village of Orland Park residents will receive new wheeled 96-gallon or 64-gallon refuse carts beginning the week of September 16. The 19,500 village households should immediately begin using the new gray carts for household garbage.

“This will make it easier for residents across the village,” said Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin. “Having a wheeled cart with a lid will help keep Orland Park neighborhoods clean,” he added.

The new refuse carts are part of a new 10 year contract between the Village of Orland Park and Waste Management with the new agreement calling for one wheeled refuse cart being supplied to each eligible residence.

“We’re excited to provide Village of Orland Park residents with our new wheeled carts,” said Mike Morley, municipal marketing manager for Waste Management. “The new carts will make it easier for residents to move their materials to the curb,” he said.

The new gray carts are to be used for trash only, with residents continuing to use the blue wheeled carts for recyclables.

Waste Management crews will begin delivery of the gray trash carts September 16, beginning on the south side of the village and working north. The company plans to have all carts delivered by October 4. Recyclables will be picked up weekly in the Village of Orland Park beginning November 1.

Residents must place the wheeled carts at the curb by 6 a.m. on their collection days. Wheeled carts should be placed a few feet apart with the wheels pointed towards the home so automated trucks can empty them.

Residents who want to dispose of old refuse containers should post signs on them, reading “cart is garbage” so the driver knows to take the old containers.

Fall Clean Up Now Curbside

Another addition to the village’s contract with Waste Management is the curbside pick-up during the village’s Fall Clean-Up Campaign. For many years, the village’s contracted waste hauler has provided dumpsters for residents to dispose of household trash during bi-annual clean ups each spring and fall.

“The village’s 2013 Fall Clean-Up Campaign will begin October 21 with Waste Management picking the items up curbside rather than residents having to bring their bulk items to the dumpsters at Public Works,” said Trustee Ed Schussler, chair of the village’s Public Works and Engineering Committee.

The curbside collection of bulk materials will occur on the homeowners’ regular garbage collection day.

“Residents can place their bulky materials at their curbs, along the parkways during these special bulk collection events,” Morley said.

Bulk items can include furniture, including chairs, couches, mattresses, box springs, tables, etc. They should be bagged, contained or bundled and placed with the trash at curbside no later than 6 a.m. the week of October 21. Waste Management will not remove items from private property.

Construction or hazardous materials, batteries, gas, oil, asbestos, medical waste, paint or household hazardous waste will not be collected. Automobile tires will be picked up provided the rims have been removed. The next bulk item pick up will be offered in the spring.
