This Weekend: Remember September 11th, Go Green and Adopt a Pet

Green, sports, charitable, pets and patriotic events happening this weekend, Sept. 8-11, in the Orland, Palos, Tinley and Oak Forest area.

Finding a social life doesn't require an ancient chinese compass. Put down your lodestones because all you need is a little help from Patch!

Going Green


September 10, 8 a.m.-noon |
Take part of Orland Township's "Sustainable Saturday" by donating unwanted electronics to be recycled. Acceptable items include televisions, monitors, computers, copiers, printers, fax machines, VCRs, keyboards, DVD players, microwaves, stereos, phones, speakers, cables, lights, computer parts, game consoles and handheld electronic devices. This is a free event.

September 10, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. | Bootsma Bookstore Cafe
Run or walk to support the visually impaired this Saturday. Watch a Youtube Video to learn more about the run/walk.

September 10, 8 a.m. |
Participate in a 5K run/walk to help Mr. James Javier cover his medical expenses. After suffering a traumatic brain injury Sept. 19, 2009, James fought his way back from an unconscious, comatose state to a minimally conscious state. The run starts at 8 a.m., with walkers right after. A kids 100-yard dash (ages 10 and younger) begins at 9 a.m.

Pets


September 10, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. | I'll be Doggone
Help support or adopt a pet in celebration of I'll Be Doggone's 6th Birthday. This event is free to pets and people alike. Watch demonstrations of agility, obedience and tricks from the Blitzen K9 Academy. Play games, buy snacks and enter a raffle.

September 9 - 11, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. |
Bring a furry friend into your life during the Mega Pet Adopt-a-Thon. In addition to pet adoption, other activities include low-cost microchipping, raffles, games and more. The event is sponsored by and .

Patriotism


September 11, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. | American Legion Post 615
Support the Heart of a Marine Foundation by participating in a motorcycle ride. The ride remembers Cpl. Kevin Clarke, who was killed by small arms fire in the Western Al-Anbar Province in Iraq on February 19, 2005.


September 11, 6pm – 8pm |
Honor the victims of 9/11 with a memorial celebration at St. Lukes Orthodox Church. Items from the Twin Towers, Pentagon, and the Flight 93 crash site will be on display. A reading of the names of the fallen, a flag presentation by the Boy and Girl Scouts and the Civil Air Patrol and refreshments will follow the service.


September 11, 8:30am – 4pm |
Honor the heros of 9/11 with the Village of Tinley Park. The day begins with a service, followed by a parade and community picnic.
