Candidate Questions

Is there any additional experience you believe qualifies you for the position?

I'm a former U.S. Army captain and Bronze Star Recipient who led combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2006 to 2007. I also spearheaded the turnaround of a division of a Fortune 500 company (Johnson & Johnson) during the economic recession.

What would your priorities be if elected to this office?

  1. Restore fiscal responsibility to the State of Illinois.
  2. Foster a healthy business environment to bring back jobs to Illinois and the southwest suburbs.
  3. Pension Reform.
  4. Education Reform
  5. Taking care of Illinois' veterans.
  6. Restore the trust between elected officials and the citizens who elected them.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

I believe in values and servant-based leadership. My diverse experience serving in the military, a Fortune 500 Company, and on the board of education at one of the largest area high school districts has provided me with the tools necessary to begin rebuilding Illinois. My combat experience has taught me how to lead in the most hostile of situations and has provided me innovative solutions to complex problems. My corporate experience allows me to look at our state's issues from a strategic level. My board of education experience allows me to reach a majority of the voters and their children, providing a positive future for Illinois.

If Illinois is looking for "24 years of experienced leaders," I urge them to look at what that experience has gotten them. We have had the "experience" of seeing the State of Illinois fail for the past decade. We are bankrupt and close to collapse. I believe it is time for a new experience. That's why the voters of the 19th District should send me to Springfield.

What should first be done by the state to keep businesses that have strongly voiced the possibility of leaving, such as CME and Sears?

The key to retaining businesses in Illinois is maintaining a level of taxation and regulatory oversight that will fund governmental operations. We need to ensure that we take care of the core mission of state government while providing a safety net for the most vulnerable in our society—children, the elderly, the disabled and the indigent. Other than that, businesses and individuals can flourish and live up to their full potential if we allow them to in a free market.

Increasing taxes, fees and regulations on Illinois businesses and individuals will ultimately drive them out of Illinois. Our total tax burdens (income/sales/excise/property/estate) are among the highest in the U.S. and are not conducive to economic growth. For every business that leaves, there are more taxes for the rest of us to pay.

I do not support large incentives to private companies and would prefer that those same funds be used to retain and attract small businesses, which make up the bulk of the business revenue to the state.

What can be done to help College Illinois?

First, reduce the amount of exposure to risk that the funds are currently invested in. Our state-selected investors have placed the money in high risk investment vehicles. We need to select conservative funds and vehicles that are geared toward growth for periods greater than 15 years. Second, when selecting investment firms that deal with taxpayers' money, we have to subject them to strict scrutiny. The financing of Illinois and the country’s educational future should not be something we are willing to gamble away. The state of Illinois failed to do so regarding previous firms. Last, let's avoid send a marketing message to parents depicting "College Illinois" as a program that is close to fail-safe and not exposed to market fluctuation. Tell th investors the truth — a lot of parents who have invested in this program were drastically misled.

What should the government do to create more jobs?

First of all, businesses are the ones that create jobs. That said, the government should create policies that foster a healthy business environment to allow for job creation and job growth in the private sector. With the 19th District between the Interstate-80 and Interstate-57 corridor, there is no excuse for why it's not at the epicenter of job creation and job growth. I support the construction of a third airport and the expansion of the Illiana corridor.

What are your philosophies on social issues such as same-sex marriage and abortion, and what should government’s role in those issues?

Regarding same-sex marriage, I believe that the institution of marriage is between a man and a woman. However, I believe in civil unions that are regulated at a state level. If an individual with a gay sexual orientation is able to serve in the military and possibly die for their country, we should not prevent him or her from having a civil union with their life partner. Regarding abortion, I am pro-choice.

Do you support a gaming bill that would increase the number of casinos or othergambling venues in Illinois? Should a casino be built in Chicago?

I support the limited expansion of gambling in Illinois and the building of a Chicago casino. Socially conservative and liberal states alike are far ahead of Illinois and realize the economic impact it could have on the state. Although casinos and gambling are not the answer to our financial troubles, it would prevent Illinois from losing millions of dollars in tax revenue it has already lost to states like Wisconsin and Indiana.

What do you suggest for property tax relief?

Encourage members of the community to get involved in their local governments. Many citizens do not understand who the taxing bodies are that have a direct impact on their property costs. Through their involvement, they, too, can run for elected office (school boards, college boards, fire protection districts, etc.) and have a significant impact on whether their community’s property taxes are increased. We also need to educate members of the community on the property tax appeals process and the services offered through organizations like the Orland Township Tax Assessor's office.

Should the state consider consolidating school districts? What would be the best way to accomplish this in your legislative district?

I support the call to consolidate the nearly 870 Illinois school districts, but I do so with the utmost caution. This is a delicate process and has to be executed correctly. There are some schools where this can be done immediately (i.e. rural community school districts). However, there are other districts with multiple feeder schools which could create problems during consolidation. The legislature has to understand that the consolidation of school districts must be done with the best interest of the students in mind, not just the state budget.

Consolidating schools will allow the district to track the progress of students from kindergarten through their high school graduation. It will ensure that students do not fall through the cracks between grade school and high school. It also removes another elected entity, another layer of bureaucracy and allows for single entity operation costs. It will be a complicated merger, but in the long run will pay off for the children and the taxpayers.

Should the state legalize marijuana?

For medicinal purposes only.

Are there ways to reform the legislative scholarship program, or would you support calls to eliminate the program?

Unless the legislature agrees to impose objective guidelines on its members to award the scholarships instead of handing them out as political favors, I will vote to abolish the program.

Who are your political heroes and why?

I have several heroes, many of whom are not political. I choose my political heroes (in no particular order) based on how they led during difficult situations.

John F. Kennedy: Although considered by many as "young & inexperienced," President Kennedy gave America hope that the United States would lead the global community in the future. He instilled the belief in the country that service and giving back was what everyone should do. He also guided the country through the Cuban Missile Crisis and Cold War and was accountable for his actions.

Abraham Lincoln: Preserved the Union through one of our country's worst conflicts to date, led with courage by ending slavery and battled adversity through his values and beliefs. George Washington: Provided visionary leadership against the worst of odds and participated in the creation of the U.S. Constitution which has been tried and tested for the past 200 + years.

Nice detailed answers. One piece of advice - never use the word 'gotten' in any context. Sounds terrible, reads terrible. Also, what is the 'game' with the signs on 171st street between yourself and Hannon. It needs to stop. Be the leader in this and demand your volunteers not to block signage. That is a sign of weakness - not needed.

Why does Illinois have 2 chambers of the Legislature? Maybe instead of consolidating schools that actually serve a public purpose, we should consolidate by 2/3 the number of useless politicians in Springfield.
One House with 1/3 the number of legislators, staff, and perks. Cut the pay of the remaining legislators by another 1/3, these are suppose to be citizen-legislators in a part-time position.
Eliminate the perk of free college tuition to political cronies. Eliminate using taxpayer money from being used to pay for the politician's personal use. Gorman using taxpayer money to pay HER OWN TUITION at Notre Dame. How is that not illegal?
This is why we have no confidence in politicians or government.

Hastings lists his address as 8872 West 159th Street. Is that not Georgio's Hotel? He lives in a hotel? Patch, please explain.

No he does not live in the hotel, that is his campaign office which is not in the 19th Senate district. Check his campaign contributions, it was donated by Georgio's. None of his fundraisers have been in the 19th Senate district either. He does not even live in the 19th district; he currently resides (supposedly has for the last 5 years) in his parents home in Orland Hills. Do you really think he cares about us in the 19th District? He has paid no property taxes and his dad is a State Democratic Central Committeeman. He doesn't represent change for IL. He won't vote to take any money from his dads pension. He should have run in the 14th district that includes Orland Hills instead of the 19th district.

8872 West 159th Street is where several storefront businesses are located. Maybe his campaign headquarters are there.

Mike:

Great Job in answering all of the questions, directly, clearly and honestly. I believe that a common sense moderate can do some great things to help Illinois. I hope the opposition can also find some common sense moderates although that appears doubtful for the near future.

Dear Mr. Hastings, As a voting Catholic in your district, I am requesting that you vote against the Marriage Equality legilation pending in Springfield. A marriage is sacred under God between a man and woman. Civil "unions" may be okay, but the word marrrriage remains to important and sacred to take lightly. CAB

Marriage, as defined by the Bible, is also:

1. Polygamy
2. A man having sexual rights to his wife's servants
3. Arranged marriages between slaves
4. A rapist and his victim
5. Selling your daughters for livestock

Actually, Mike F. only the arranged marriage passage you mentioned use the "marriage" definition.

Was there slavery in Biblical times? Of course. But there is a difference in the way "marriage" was defined for a concubine's activities. The closest thing in today's Western society to the concubine is a pregnancy surrogate as used by Bill Rancic and his wife. When a wife couldn't conceive for some reason, another woman was selected to bear a child for the husband, and more often than not the child was raised as the wife's child would've been. this is not very different than adoption from a pregnant mother today.

i guess if you knew anything about the cultural institutioin of arranged marriages, you'd know that marriages were arranged for virtually EVERYONE at the time by their parents or guardians. The reason was simple and logical. Experienced parents evaluated the choices for mating available, and tried to make the best choice for improving status and genetics for those they cared about, both children and servants.

This practice is still very much alive in in many Eastern cultures, and it can be argued that this practice has been FAR more successful for the individuals and society than than the high failure rate "domestic partnering" system that's propagated in today's American dysfunctional social cesspool.

One other thing regarding slavery in the ancient times. While some slavery was force through subjugation, much of it was voluntary. Why? Many people back then were refugees from famine, war, and plague from Eastern European nations. These refugees often had only two choices; die from starvation or the cold or volunteer to become a slave of some patrician and be fed and cared for while losing freedom. The children were the first to die from the lack of food and the elements, so often parents gave their children to become slaves for nothing other than the promise of their children being fed and housed. So many refugees were forced to do this from the Slavic nations that the latin term "Slav" became the root word for "slave" in Latin

Dear Mr. Hastings, as a person without hate or prejudice, I ask you vote for treating all the people of Illinois as human beings and vote to legalize all marriage. Marriage is between two loving consenting adults.

@Chris - your marriage is only under God if you choose it. Marriage is a legal binding agreement and has nothing to do with religion unless you want it to.

"I ask you vote for treating all the people of Illinois as human beings and vote to legalize all marriage." Does this mean you support a 14 year old marrying another 14 year old?

One could make a stronger case that a heterosexual couple of young reproductive age should be able to get married than for that of a same sex marriage.

This is a HUGE potential cost for a state that's already broke, and now is certainly not the time to be expanding expensive entitlements.

The simple fact is that giving special benefits to a same sex couple just because they're doing each other is a perversion of fairness and law. Many same sex friends would give their lives for each other. One could argue that their relationship is far stronger than many, or most, gay couples. Why not give that stronger relationship the same perks as a "married" couple? The reason is simple, WE CAN"T AFFORD IT AND IT'S BAD PUBLIC POLICY!

This isn't about being "equal" for people who are gay. It's about using state powers to empower gays to FORCE acceptance of their lifestyles on others who reject their lifestyle, and choose not to subsidize it.

No one is trying to take the freedom of gays to act as they wish away from them. This is about taking the freedom away from others to accept or reject them based on their values and morals.

You fought long and hard for freedom, Mike. Don't use your political career to take away what so many fought and died for!

Emily,
For you to state that you are a person without hate or prejudice is a joke.
You are extremely prejudiced against gun owners such as myself.
You also seem, based on your previous posts, to either hate or are extremely prejudiced towards conservatives.

Bob - let's not get silly. Consenting adults is legal adult age. What is the cost of marriage equality to the state? More weddings = more revenue. Bad policy to treat your citizens as equals? Bob, what you are is a bully. You don't agree with marriage equality cause personally you think it's icky and everyone should live how you want them to.

TFBS - I have never been prejudice against you or your gun ownership. Just because I feel there isn't a need and my opinion differs from yours is not prejudice. If I knew you personally, I wouldn't march outside your home protesting your right.

Why is it a right to own a weapon but not get married to who you want?

"Not get silly"?LOL C'mon, Emily, with every post you show how ignorant you are of other posters and issues in general.

As far as my considering gay relations as "icky", you show how infantile you are. If you understood the issue, you'd know that relations between adults are not at issue here. Sodomy laws were ended long ago.

This reminds of a Woody Allen remark. He was once asked if he thought sex was dirty. He replied, "Yes, if it's done right!"LOL

"Civil unions" give many of the financial and benefit advantages of marriage, but not all. Right of survivorship can be handled through trusts, wills, and durable power of attorney, so those benefits are not denied gays.

What this is about is empowering gays to force their will on churches, especially those that decry gay relations, Once again, this is not about creating "equality" or freedom, it's about tyranny of the minority and taking freedom from others. 'nuff said.

Bob - How will it 'force their will' on churches? Churches do not have to marry anyone they do not want to. How is two people of the same gender getting married taking freedom from you?

Emily, it is really quite simple, I have the RIGHT to have a gun because of the 2nd amendment.
You do not have the Right to marry whomever you want because it is not an amendment to the Constitution, see, really simple.
As you said earlier in a response about illegals getting drivers licenses, I am just pointing out facts. If you have issues with the current policy, I suggest you leave your comments with the U.S. Government. Complaining on the Patch isn't going to get you anywhere.

"Churches do not have to marry anyone they do not want to." Not now, but they will if this law is passed. Once marriage between two people of the same sex becomes law, this will provide standing for any homosexual to sue the church to force it to peform the marriage, even if it is against the tenets of the church.

Perhaps more troubling is the effect this will have on sex education in schools. Once homosexual marriage is legal, schools will be forced to promte homosexual relatiionshsips in their "health classes" the same way it was forced into the schools when Massachussetts made gay marriage law. If you don't think there's a liberal judge in Illinois who will compel a church to perform such a ceremony, you kow nothing of the judiciary in Illinois!

Emily, when you compel someone to take food off their families' table to extend marital benefits to same sex spouses, you take away the freedom of the taxpayer to use the resources on their family, or for other worthy causes like education and roads, and you diminish the individual's right to chose how what they earn is spent.

When you compel a church and it's congregation to perform marriages against their religious beliefs, you're taking away their freedom of religion.

When you force schools to promote homosexual marriage to your young children in public schools, you take away parents' freedom to teach about this subject in an even handed and honest way to their children.

Want some more examples?

Emily, first of all, you are prejudiced towards gun owners. That is a fact. Just because you don't like guns, you feel that nobody should have them.
prej·u·dice (prj-ds)
n.
1.
a. An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.
b. A preconceived preference or idea.
You have posted many times, that guns are not necessary because YOU don't see the need. You have also posted that there is no evidence that concealed carry is a detriment to crime. You have an opinion about guns with no knowledge of the people that have them. That is the definition of prejudice.
Do bad things sometimes happen that involve guns? Yes, they do. Do bad things happen that involve cars? Yes, they do, and at a much higher rate than they do with guns. Why are you not saying that nobody needs cars?
By singling out only guns, you are showing a prejudice towards guns and their owners.

As I said before, I don't care what you and your guns do. I wouldn't care if you spend hours every day juggling your arsenal of weapons then playing Russian roulette. Does not bother me one bit.
Yes, I posted that statistically proven that conceal and carry does not make you safer.

Emily, unlike you, I will cite my source.
According to statistics kept by the N.C. Attorney General's Office the raw number of violent crimes – murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults – has dropped. In 1995, there were 45,016 such crimes throughout the state. In 2010, the last year for which state level data is available, there were 34,033 such crimes.
When those numbers are converted into rates that take into account population growth, the violent crime rate dropped from 649 per 100,000 people in 1995 to 374.4 per 100,000 people in 2010. That's a drop of 24.4 percent in terms of the raw number of crimes or a drop of 42.3 percent drop in the violent crime rate.
These numbers may not mean anything to you, but, I will let you know that 1995 is the year that NC allowed concealed carry.
So put those numbers into your statistics and see what you get.
Oh yeah, if I was juggling my guns and then playing Russian roulette, I'm sure that it would bother you as the fact that I or anyone else owns guns seems to bother you greatly.
It may please you to know that I will not juggle or play games with my guns as this would be both foolish and dangerous. In case you don't know, guns are not toys.
