Judge Wants Deal Done in 2011 Robbery Case or Else Sending it to Trial

The last of four men still in jail for allegedly knocking over an Orland Park jewelry store in October 2011 will likely cop a plea next month.

Three of four men charged with robbing an Orland Park jewelry store more than three and a half years ago have been shipped off to prison, and the judge wants the last case taken care of next month. "If this is not resolved by June 18 it will go to trial," Cook County Judge Colleen Hyland said during a brief Thursday hearing for Antoine Kelly at the Bridgeview Courthouse. Kelly, 33, is the last of four men remaining in the Cook County Jail following their arrests for allegedly robbing Jewelry Gems & Design in October 2011. Kelly's co-defendants—Charles Harper, 38, Darrin Carter, 34, and Lance Vaughn, 33—have all pleaded guilty. Harper got 22 years in prison, Carter was sentenced to 16 years and Vaughn got 13. Update Orland Park is scheduled to make a final vote in June on a new waste hauling contract that could include lower prices for the first two years of service in a proposed 10-year contract.  A new pricing plan from Waste Management was presented during Monday night's public works committee meeting that included a starting rate of $18.58 per month for waste and recycling hauling. The village's current rate is $19.40. The pricing plan has the monthly rate going higher than $19.40 in its third year, though the overall changes to prices for Waste Management's new contract over 10 years is $1,821,908 lower than the pricing plan presented in early January, according to village documents.  The new waste hauling contract also includes recycling …

Cook County at 'Slight Risk' of Severe Weather Throughout Tuesday

Large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center noted in its technical discussions that isolated tornadoes are also possible on Monday and Tuesday. "The most violent storms will ignite during the afternoon and evening hours as daytime heating causes instability," Accuweather.com Meteorologist Meghan Evans wrote in her…

Retired Teacher Finally Gets a Good Night Sleep

Silver Cross Sleep Disorders Center Offers Relief to Sleepless Nights.

For over two decades every night 63 year-old Darrell Holmquist’s sleep was always interrupted. His road to a restful sleep was discovered in an unusual way because Darrell wasn’t overweight, didn’t smoke or over indulge in alcohol, which are many of the common causes to sleepless nights. His optometrist recommended Darrell to see his primary care physician after learning of his sleepless nights and then discovering the blood vessels behind his eyes were in poor condition. “I have glaucoma and I recently learned that research has shown a link with people who have glaucoma and those who sleep poorly,” said Holmquist, who retired after 33 years of teaching history at Joliet Central and Lincoln-Way East and Central High Schools. “So I …
