Orland Fire Protection District supervisors are building a program to increase the number of Automated External Defibrillators throughout the community, and get more people trained in CPR to help sudden cardiac arrest victims.
Orland Fire Battalion Chief Raymond Kay and Lieutenant Mark Duke believe a few simple steps taken can help lower heart attack deaths in the area. The Orland Fire supervisors are working to develop a program that will increase CPR instruction and also boost the number of available Automated External Defibrillators for situations where people suddenly go into cardiac arrest. The program is called Orland Fire Community CARE, the acronym standing for Cardiac Arrest Rescue Enterprise. “Enterprise in that acronym means it’s a community effort,” Kay said. “It’s not just one agency. Orland Fire Battalion Chief Nick Cinquepalmi and 17-year-old Jake Pechukas worked together to help a 32-year-old man who had a heart attack on a basketball court Sunday.
Swift teamwork between an Orland Fire Protection District battalion chief and an Orland Park Sportsplex staff member helped save the life of a 32-year-old Orland Hills man who had a heart attack Sunday. Orland Fire Battalion Chief Nick Cinquepalmi stopped by the Sportsplex around 4:30 p.m. Sunday to watch his son play basketball with the Orland Youth Association, according to a release from the fire district. Jerling students and staff, as well as medical and emergency professionals, shared their experiences where knowing CPR and how to use a defibrillator saved a person's life.
Jerling Jr. High's 7th grade student class successfully completed a course in CPR techniques and were treated to an assembly to celebrate their accomplishments. Orland School District 135 School Board Member Lynne Donegan is a proponent of the course offered to junior high students district-wide over the last four years, stemming from a personal experience. This year alone, over 800 seventh grade students in District 135 schools were trained to use CPR and AED. Donegan said she hopes that all schools, nationwide, will soon offer CPR/AED training.
