This Week's Pet: Water-Loving Alaskan Husky Mix

Jack is a 4-year-old pup who loves to be outside. He also can't get enough of the garden hose, as shown in the accompanying video.

Jack needs someone he can play with. The 4-year-old, 88-pound Alaskan Husky mix is full of energy—especially when there's a hose or pool within reach. As temperatures soared beyond 90 degrees on Monday, he splashed around outside in any water he could find. He was happy as a lark, despite his thick wintry coat.  Jack very recently found his way to PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park, where he was relinquished by his owner. The person said Jack didn't get along well with other animals but volunteers said he's shown no signs of aggression while staying at his hopefully temporary home. He scurries up to newcomers, hungry for a pet, and his golden eyes glisten in the sun.  The American Kennel Club doesn't list the Alaskan Husky as a breed …

This Week's Pets: Oodles of Kittens

We're featuring five undeniably adorable kittens in this week's edition of Adopt Me. This bunch only serves as a preview of the 25 little ones waiting in cages at PAWS Animal Shelter right now, looking for homes.

Some volunteers at PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park consider summer to be stray kitten season.  The little ones are coming out of the woodwork. In some cases, like today's featured pets, entire litters are being relinquished while in others, lone kittens are finding their way to the shelter. There were 25 young ones being housed at the shelter on Monday afternoon and volunteers said that around 20 others were in foster care. If you know anyone looking for a tiny furry friend, PAWS is the place to be. Good luck taking your pick, though. All will melt your heart. This week, we're featuring three male kittens—Alan, Delta and Ranger—and two female ones—Patch (I swear, we didn't name her) and Dezi. The bundle of love came to PAWS in May. All …

This Week's Pets: 5 Energetic Mastiff Mix Pups

PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park is on the prowl for homes for five puppies that won't be small for long. At around 3 months old, they are already tipping the scales at about 30 pounds.

If you're looking for a loving, loyal furry friend and have the necessary room to house a "gentle giant," consider adopting any of five Mastiff-mix puppies from PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park. Vinnie, Kevin, Cindy, Raymond and George, now around 3 months old, were taken to the shelter about a month ago by a Harvey dog owner whose Mastiff had an unwanted pregnancy, volunteers said Monday.  They were sick with canine parvoviris, a contagious viral infection of the intestinal track, but miraculously, all survived. They now have an exemplary bill of health and if you see them play together, you'd never know they were ill in the first place. Brothers Kevin and Vinnie rolled around on the lawn outside PAWS Monday afternoon, nibbling and …

This Week's Pet: A Floppy-Eared Hound Mix With Energy for Days

If you're looking for a new companion, consider Zeke. He's a bit rambunctious but his love for affection matches his spunky spirit.

If you're a mover and a shaker, it's nice to have someone by your side who can keep up—like Zeke, a 1 1/2-year-old pup who is wishing for a new home. A plott hound mix whose smooth brindle coat shines in the sun, Zeke is waiting for you at PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park. His droopy ears and long tail make it difficult to take him seriously. He prances around the outdoor cages and likes chasing after toys. He understands simple commands, like "sit" and "down," and enjoys head scratches. He's also house trained. Other than that, Zeke seems to fit the plott bill. The American Kennel Club website describes his breed as eager to please, loyal, intelligent and alert in the home, and aggressive, bold and fearless while hunting. Owners should …

This Week's Pets: A Cuddly Kitty and a Princess Looking for Forever

Meet two cats that will give you all the love you need. One has been at PAWS for six months and the other, nearly two years.

This week, it's all about the lap cats. Daisy Kitty is a snow white, long-haired cat who absolutely loves to be loved. If you place her on your lap, she'll stay there and soak up your affection. This pretty kitty is 6 years old and first came to PAWS Animal Shelter on Sept. 2, 2011.  She was adopted out but brought back after her new owner had a baby, taking time away from her ability to give Daisy Kitty what she needed. She'd do well in just about any household as long as she has someone to bond with. Our second pet of the week is Princess, a 4-year-old pint-sized feline who will hit her two year mark at PAWS this summer. The short-haired tabby is brave and spirited yet sweet and a bit shy.  She has a bad left eye that's been treated, …

This Week's Pet: A Lounging Chihuahua Mix

This week, we bring you an 8-year-old pup who's looking for a place to call his own.

Spike is truly one of a kind. He's a loving little guy who found his way back to PAWS Animal Shelter in Tinley Park from Grayslake, where his owner passed away. The 8-year-old pooch needed a place to go and still does. PAWS volunteers admit that he's a "one person dog." He'd be best suited for a senior citizen who wants a loyal companion, they said.   Puppies Clifford, Ceilia and Cora are still available, as are cats Tilly and Dusty. Be sure to check out more pets by perusing our Adopt Me! features.

This Week's Pet: Molly

The 7-year-old tan boxer mix is looking for a home.

Molly is a very sweet, 7-year-old boxer mix who is making her second stay at the Tinley Park PAWS Animal Shelter. She returned when her owners had to move, and now she's looking for another home. She is well-trained and does well with children. Molly is calm and great to relax with on the couch. If you're interested in adopting a cat, our pets from last week, Jason and Harley, are both still available as of today.
