Prosecutors wanted Allan Kustok to be held without the possibility of bonding out.
In the more than two and a half years Allan Kustok has been locked up for allegedly murdering his wife, he has yet to scratch together the $200,000 he needs to get out of custody. On Monday, a prosecutor argued that Kustok should have no hope at all of securing his release before trial. Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Gonzalez moved to have Kustok held without bond. Gonzalez argued that an expert determined Kustok used a gun to kill his wife, Anita Kustok. Since Allan Kustok used a firearm, another 25 years—or even a life term—can be tacked on his sentence if he is found guilty, Gonzalez said during a Monday morning hearing at the Bridgeview courthouse. And with Allan Kustok looking at life behind bars, Gonzalez said he …

A hearing in the Allan Kustok murder case was postponed when no one brought Allan Kustok to court.
A hearing in the murder case of an Orland Park man charged with gunning down his wife never happened after no one brought the alleged killer to court. "Although his papers have been sent, the body was not," said Rick Beuke, the attorney for Allan Kustok. Kustok was to appear at the Bridgeview courthouse Monday morning, but no one picked him up from where he is being held at the Kankakee County jail. Kustok was taken from the Cook County Jail to Kankakee shortly after his arrest when officials learned he had worked as a sanitarian at the jail from 2004 to 2007 and is familiar with the inner workings of the facility. Beuke said he did not know why his client wasn't in court Monday. Cook County Judge John Joseph Hynes reset the hearing for …

The attorney for Allan Kustok, who is accused of murdering his wife Anita Kustok, said after a court hearing Tuesday that he still is waiting for Orland Park police reports.
The attorney representing an Orland Park man accused of shooting his wife in October said both he and prosecutors are waiting on police reports to move the case forward. Rick Beuke, who is defending 59-year-old Allan Kustok on a charge of first-degree murder, said he and the prosecution are looking to examine "basic police reports" regarding the shooting death of Anita "Jeanie" Kustok. The 58-year-old teacher was found dead at the Kustok home on Royal Oaks Lane from a gunshot wound to the head in October. During Kustok's recent court hearing Tuesday, Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Gonzalez said she did not have new information related to the case to show the defense. "As soon as I get some new materials, I will get them to them right …

"She was an angel," says her daughter as hundreds of family and friends of the slain schoolteacher from Orland Park met in Calumet City for a funeral Mass Thursday.
The day Jeanie Kustok died, the Orland Park woman's spirit followed her children. At Thursday's funeral Mass in Our Lady of Knock Catholic Church in Calumet City, Zak Kustok told mourners how he ordered a meal from a Panera restaurant with his family on the day his mother died. He ordered a turkey sandwich but received a tuna salad, instead. "Sarah said 'Every time mom and I went to Panera she ordered a tuna salad sandwich,'" Zak said. "If we didn't already know she was with us always, she wanted to make sure it was ingrained and sent that down." Recalling his mother's warmth and strength, the former Northwestern football star thanked attendees for being at the service and for stopping by Wednesday's visitation in Lansing to mourn with him…

Orland Park man accused of murdering his wife told police he woke to find she was shot in the head and she still held the gun.
Only Allan Kustok knows what happened in the brick house next to a horse farm on Royal Oaks Lane. Three days after Anita Kustok's death, disbelief has descended on the community as a family everyone described as happy and friendly now finds itself shattered, its 59-year-old patriarch charged with his wife's murder. Allan Kustok tells a tale of waking up to a bloody suicide. Police and prosecutors don't believe him. He says he awoke Wednesday morning to a loud noise. Kustok told police he found his wife dead with a gunshot through her face. Anita "Jeanie" Kustok was lying on the floor, arms crossed, with a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver in her right hand, he said. The husband and wife of 34 years were alone in the family's Orland Park home…

Accused Orland wife killer was moved to Kankakee County Jail Saturday morning. Authorities decided his familiarity with Cook County Jail after working there was a risk.
Allan Kustok was transferred from Cook County Jail to Kankakee County Jail Saturday morning after officials decided Kustok's past jailhouse employment was a risk. "Because of his familiarity with our jail and some staff, we made the decision to move him," Steve Patterson, spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office, wrote in an email. Kustok worked as a sanitarian at Cook County Jail between 2004 and early 2007, where he made about $46,000 a year. The sanitarian makes inspections and evaluates living quarters, dining halls, recreation areas, bathrooms and medical facilities within the jail to make sure all health codes are met. He arrived at the Kankakee jail around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Kustok remains in custody on one count of first-…

Teacher worked with gifted students and was known for her kindness; Orland Park neighbors shocked by her death.
Neighbors and colleagues of Anita Kustok were shocked and saddened after learning about her death from a gunshot wound to the head Wednesday morning. Those who worked with Kustok at Central Elementary School in Riverside described her as an outgoing and inventive teacher who cared deeply about her family. People who live near the Kustok residence on Royal Oaks Lane in Orland Park could not recall any family conflicts and said they thought of Anita and husband, Allan Kustok, as friendly. Police were told Anita Kustok, 58, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights, where she had been taken by a family member after she suffered a gunshot wound in the face. Since then, the Cook County State's Attorney's…
