Economy, Construction Not Slowing Shelander From Opening New Shop

Kay's Old Orland Market Place is the newest place to sell old stuff in the antique district of Orland Park.

Road construction and the economy have done the Old Orland Antique Shops no favors in recent years. But that didn’t stop Kay Shelander from opening up a second shop in the district on July 30. Shelander has 34 years of experience in the business and once owned five stores in the district. She eventually sold most of them and kept the Beacon Hill Antique Shop. She opened a new consignment shop Monday at the vacant building that was built in 1920, and used to house a bank and a previous antique shop. Her granddaughter, 22-year-old Stephanie Coleman, is managing the new shop, called Kay’s Old Orland Market Place, located at 14316 Beacon Ave. Coleman knows that the bad economy has been hard on dealers. “Antiques have been hit so hard – it’s …

Orland Park Antique Store Stands the Test of Time

Anna B’s Antiques ‘N Things has something for everyone…even Man-tiques.

The blue house sitting at 14330 Beacon Avenue has had several identities over the years, but housing antiques seems to be its calling.  The house was owned and lived in by the Gunderman family in the 1900s. It was purchased and turned into an antique store in the 1980s and since then took on several businesses. The antique store turned into a gift shop and then into an in-line skateboarding store. It wasn’t until eight years ago, when Nila Rundle had a life-changing experience and decided it was time to finally pursue her dreams, that the space was converted back into an antiques store. “There’s a lot of history here,” Rundle said, referring to the ties the Gunderman family had to Orland Park. One of the Gunderman’s daughters, Agnes, lived…
