Five Indiana men accused of battery and mob action for their involvement in the Ashford House attack case, are one step closer to a plea agreement as they wait for a sentencing recommendation from a Cook County judge. John Tucker, 26; Cody Sutherlin, 23; Dylan Sutherlin, 20; Alex Stuck, 22; and Jason Sutherlin, 33, have been in custody since May. They are charged with mob action, armed violence, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property. A pre-sentencing investigation wrapped up this week in Cook County Judge Carmen K. Aguilar's Bridgeview courtroom; if a deal offered by Aguilar isn't favorable to the men's defense team, the case will move forward. The next court date has been set for Dec. 7. Patch rounds up the Southland's major …

Lawyers representing the five men accused of attacking a group of alleged white supremacists in May motioned Tuesday to suppress evidence gathered in the traffic stop that led to their arrest.
Attorneys representing five men who were accused in May of an attack at a Tinley Park restaurant said Tuesday morning that they believe the traffic stop leading to the group's arrest was illegal. They filed a motion shortly after 11 a.m. to suppress evidence gathered during that stop, in which Indiana men John Tucker, 26; Cody Sutherlin, 23; Dylan Sutherlin, 20; Alex Stuck, 22; and Jason Sutherlin, 33; were arrested. Sign up for Orland Park Patch breaking news alerts. "Basically, we're saying that the arrest was invalid," Cody Sutherlin’s attorney, James Fennery, said. "We believe there was an unlawful stop of the vehicle." Asked what would deem the stop "unlawful," Fennery only clarified to say it "involves the vehicle" and the "…

Five Indiana men accused of storming into the Ashford House, wielding hammers, nunchucks and other weapons used to cause numerous injuries and damage, pleaded not guilty to a long list of charges against them.
Attorneys representing Cody Sutherlin, 23; Dylan Sutherlin, 20; Alex Stuck, 22; John Tucker, 26; and Jason Sutherlin, 33, otherwise known as the Ashford House 5, made their first moves in court on Thursday. First, they brought forth petitions to get a new judge on the case. Then the five men officially said before the court that they are not guilty of committing the attack at Ashford House in May. "There's nothing more to be said other than that they pleaded not guilty and we intend to prove that," said defense attorney Aaron Goldstein, who is representing Jason Sutherlin. Assistant State's Attorney Debbie Lawler then presented attorneys with a preliminary stack of evidence, which included a DVD, and let them know "more will be coming." …

An expert who studies both groups involved in the Ashford House attack Saturday said the meeting was "advertised for months" on Neo-Nazi websites. The notion that diners weren't white supremacists is "absurd," he says.
Experts say there's nothing new about violent acts among radical leftists. What differentiates members of the the Anti-Racist Action movement’s most recent attack, however, is where they chose to strike—a quaint locally-owned restaurant on a busy Tinley Park thoroughfare. "The anti-racists have always been a violent group trying to find Neo-nazis and beat them up," said Mark Potok, senior fellow with the Southern Poverty Law Center, or SPLC. "There has been a long history of these incidents. The difference is we've never seen one in a family restaurant on the south side of Chicago. That's really quite something." The chosen venue was among Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki's initial conundrums, too, he said on Monday. "One of my first thoughts…

Efforts to raise money are under way for two groups involved in a violent attack at the Ashford House in Tinley Park. Anti-racists are claiming responsibility for the brutality while officials have said white supremacists were the targets.
Radical solidarity, usually measured in bodies, bombs and bombast, is now being measured in dollars. Donation pages have been established for people on both sides of a blitzkrieg inside the Ashford House Restaurant on Saturday. Five Indiana men, along with 13 companions, connected with the Anti-Racist Action (ARA) movement are accused of targeting and beating an unsuspecting group of white nationalists. What supposedly began as the first meeting of the European Heritage Association (EHA)—which looks to provide resources for small business owners of their kind—ended in mob violence. One page hoping to garner $250,000 for bail, “adequate legal representation” and the care of their families of the men arrested has reached $850 in a couple …

After a quiet and discouraging day for a Tinley Park business owner whose restaurant was the site of a brutal attack over the weekend, community members didn't hesitate to show their support on Monday.
After seeing the "ghost town" that was his restaurant on Sunday, Mike Winston said he never would have expected Monday to be what it was—an overwhelming outpouring of support from the community. The Ashford House and adjacent Winston Market owner said he knew business would take a hit after a mob of about 15 assailants descended on his restaurant Saturday afternoon. But there were few parking spots to be had around 10:40 a.m. Monday morning. Many diners said they were there specifically to show their support for Winston. Customers like Bob and Jeanne Gile, of Orland Park, knew Monday called for a visit to one of their most beloved Irish-rooted restaurants. "We came to support the business," Jeanne said around 11 a.m. with her husband, …

Brandon Spiller was hospitalized after his "European Heritage Group" was set upon in Tinley Park by a mob of "anti-racist" attackers. He has "no idea why" anyone would want to hurt him or his newfound friends. "They terrorized us," he says.
Brandon Spiller says he's a victim. The 29-year-old Wisconsin resident was among those who met to dine at Ashford House in Tinley Park Saturday, only to be "terrorized" in an ambush. His clan of about 15 to 20 included people from all over the country who were interested in joining the European Heritage Group, which he said was holding its first meeting around 12:30 p.m. in a back area of the Irish-rooted restaurant on 159th Street. "We were just meeting for networking and helping people out and finding resources available in our area for those of European descent," he said. "It was just a meeting to get to know each other." But the group didn't even have a chance to get down to business that afternoon, he said. Shortly after ordering …

Five Indiana men were accused of felony mob action, among other charges, during a Monday afternoon court appearance. Two men who prosecutors say were targeted in the Ashford House attack were charged separately.
Bail was set Monday for five Indiana men who stood as a group in connection with a Saturday afternoon mob-style attack in Tinley Park. Two among those targeted in the attack, who officials say are associated with white supremacist organizations, were also charged. They appeared before a judge separately. Dylan J. Sutherlin, 20, Cody Lee Edward Sutherlin, 23, and Alex R. Stuck, 22, all of Bloomington, Ind.; joined Jason W. Sutherlin, 33, of Gosport, Ind.; and John S. Tucker, 26, of Spencer, Ind., in front of Cook County Associate Judge Terence B. Smith. A group of about a dozen showed in court to support the suspects. Several of them collectively gasped when the highest bail amount—$250,000 for Jason Sutherlin because of his criminal …
