Coroner Reveals Scheidegger had Alcohol in his System During Fatal Crash

A Carroll County official confirmed results of a blood-alcohol test, following Carl Sandburg High School Athletic Director Bruce Scheidegger’s death about three months ago.

Bruce Scheidegger was over the legal limit for alcohol when he was killed in a car accident about three months ago, according to a Sun Times Media report. Carroll County Chief Deputy Coroner Chris Martin said a toxicology report showed Scheidegger had alcohol in his system at the time of the fatal accident, but did not confirm a specific blood-alcohol level, according to the media report. Carl Sandburg High School’s beloved athletic director attended an IHSA state bowling tournament on Feb. 9, and later was driving on Loran Road north of Mt. Carroll in northwestern Illinois when his car left the road. He was the only person in the car, and no other vehicles were involved. Scheidegger was 54. D230 to Start Search for Next Sandburg Athletic Director

Consolidated High School District 230 are looking within their ranks and outside for a new candidate to fill the large shoes left behind by Bruce Scheidegger. In the meantime, current staff are picking up the slack, according to The Regional News.

Finding the right candidate to replace Carl Sandburg High School’s beloved athletic director Bruce Scheidegger may take some time. While Consolidated High School District 230 is preparing to start searching for the right candidate, Sandburg’s physical education department chair Steve McInerney is serving as the interim athletic director with help from Mike Polz, Sandburg’s assistant athletic director, according to a report by Jeff Vorva for The Regional News. Scheidegger died after his car went off the road in rural Carroll County. He was remembered by hundreds in tributes since his passing. A timeline hasn’t yet been set for the search. The Carl Sandburg High School varsity wrestlers look back on a bittersweet second consecutive state championship victory.

The Sandburg Eagles varsity wrestling team looked back on their recent championship victory with heavy hearts. Losing Sandburg athletic director Bruce Scheidegger was devastating, but the team dedicated the rest of their season to him and came out victorious.  Watch as wrestlers and coach Eric Siebert reflect on the championship and on Scheidegger on Comcast Sportsnet. A Kind, Generous and Helpful Man: Scheidegger Remembered by Family, Pastor

A memorial service was held Monday in Tinley Park for Carl Sandburg High School Athletic Director Bruce Scheidegger.

Pastor Paul Strand has met a lot of people in his life. But in the 35 years he has served as a clergyman, the Trinity Lutheran Church pastor said Monday to people who knew Bruce Scheidegger that he doesn’t often meet kind people. Scheidegger, on the other hand, was more than just kind. “All I have heard in the past week, and overheard, is he was such a kind man,” Strand continued. “He was such a generous man. He was such a helpful man. The greatest compliment Bruce ever received is that.” Scheidegger, 54, died between Feb. 9 and 10 in Carroll County in a car accident. Hundreds gathered at Carl Sandburg High School Sunday to honor Bruce Scheidegger, the much-loved athletic director who died last week.

People from several different points in Bruce Scheidegger's life shared memories of him Sunday at Carl Sandburg High School.  Yet they all told similar stories of his kindness, endless energy, dedication to all sports on his watch and him as a model family man. Students, school administrators, coaches who worked for him and coaches he worked with shared similar thoughts on Scheidegger, and the lasting impact he left on their lives, in front of hundreds gathered in the Eagle Gym. Scheidegger died between Feb. 9 and 10 in a car accident in Carroll County. He was 54 years old, and affected countless people throughout his life. Fans observed a moment of silence in memory of the late-Bruce Scheidegger before Sandburg's boys basketball game vs. Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night in Orland Park.

Sandburg math teacher and public address man Mark Peterson asked fans to stand and join in a moment of silence in memory of the late-Bruce Scheidegger before the opening tip of the Eagles' basketball game vs. Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night in Orland Park. H-F scored a 52-36 victory and raised its record to 19-5. A celebration of the life of Scheidegger will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in the Eagle Gym at Sandburg High School. Afterward, light refreshments will be served in the commons. Scheidegger, 54, was found dead Sunday, Feb. 10, after a single-car accident in Carroll County, southwest of Freeport. The passing of Bruce Scheidegger is so very sad. He did so much for Sandburg's Athletic Department with his positive approach. He was so encouraging to the staff and students with that great smile. My condolences to his family and friends. Peace Bruce.   more ›
