Orland Fire Passes New $29 Million Budget While Contract Negotiations Continue

The Orland Fire Protection District board voted in favor of a budget with $29,035,294 in expenditures. How salaries for the district’s staff will affect the budget remain to be seen until contracts are in place.

The Orland Fire Protection District’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget that includes $29,035,294 in projected expenditures and $29,931,000 in expected revenue, at Tuesday night’s meeting. The 2013 budget is about $300,000 less in expenses than was planned for in 2012. District administrators attributed the reduction to cutting $4.8 million from department head requests submitted in mid-October, a lower benefit obligation through making an additional payment to the district’s retiree health care trust fund and prioritizing costs that are specific to emergency response. “Things that have a more direct impact on our ability to respond to an emergency in a timely fashion get a higher priority,” Orland …

11 New Firefighters Hired, Expected to Start Shifts in November

The Orland Fire Protection District is about to start training the 11 new firefighters that were recently offered positions, though they will spend a full year as probationary hires.

Eleven firefighters have accepted employment offers from the Orland Fire Protection District, and their formal training is expected to start next month. Six of the newly hired firefighters are from the original list of 11 candidates initially voted in by the district’s board in April 2011, only to be immediately put on hold when the new trustees assumed positions the following month. The board voted in favor of taking on 11 new hires at the previous board meeting in July. The new hires’ first task as part of Orland Fire will be to complete an eight-week training program scheduled to start in September, before working actual shifts in November, Orland Fire Chief Ken Brucki said during Tuesday night’s fire district board meeting. “Upon …

No One Injured in Fire on Chapel Hill Road (Video)

A two-story home on 157th and Chapel Hill Road is left largely in tact, thanks to a swift response from the Orland Fire Department. Homeowners were out at the time of the fire.

Nobody was home when fire sparked in the kitchen of 15731 Chapel Hill Road shortly after 7:30 p.m. Orland Fire Chief Ken Brucki says neighbors alerted the department when they noticed smoke coming out of the kitchen area. Firefighters arrived on the scene within three minutes and confirmed a fire largely contained within the kitchen. "Our boys made an aggressive interior attack," Brucki said.  Coordinated efforts between an extinguishing team on the ground and a ventilation team above allowed firefighters to quickly and safely put out the blaze while minimalizing damage to the property, Brucki said. Within 15 minutes, the fire was contained, according to the chief. No injuries were reported. The family's dog was home at the time of the …

Residents Escape House Before Garage Fire Spread

Flames reached an attached bedroom, but didn’t go any further and overall a majority of the house was spared from heavy damage.

Orland firefighters took on a garage fire that spread to an adjacent bedroom Tuesday afternoon, but didn’t cause any injuries among residents or fire personnel. The Orland Fire Protection District was called around 2:25 p.m. about a fire in the attached garage of a house in the 8100 block of Anne Drive, according to Orland Fire Chief Ken Brucki. Residents were home at the time, but with the help of neighbors, they got out of the house before anyone was injured, Brucki said. A car was parked in the garage at the time, but a cause for the fire is still under investigation as of Tuesday night, Brucki said. Firefighters were working both inside and outside the house to minimize damage, and the efforts meant they didn’t need to be pump water …
