Together We Cope and its Adopt a Child program hopes to create Christmas smiles for nearly 1,800 local children this holiday season. Instead of empty stockings, these children will be able to unwrap gifts given to them by strangers who care. In these ongoing difficult economic times, Together We Cope turns to the communities it serves and asks for help. In turn they help individuals and families in need in four townships: Bremen, Orland, Palos and Worth. The communities they serve include Orland Park, Orland Hills and 24 other nearby towns. When it comes to the annual gift drive the sponsors have been generous, according to Margaret Seltzner, communications manager at Together We Cope. The Adopt a Child program brings together children who…

Parents already know, former Orland Park resident Kathy Martini says, so now the goal is to educate children about why they can't eat certain foods.
Four years ago during a Christmas party, Kathy Martini’s 2-year-old daughter Caroline snuck a peanut butter cookie at the kids’ table. One bite of the forbidden treat meant trouble. Caroline started coughing and vomiting, and developed hives and a drop in blood pressure. “When I lifted up the napkin and saw a peanut butter cookie I thought, ‘Oh no!’” said Martini, who had heard not to give peanut butter to children until age 3. Luckily, Martini recognized Caroline’s symptoms as an allergic reaction, partly because her older daughter Katelyn’s friend has a peanut butter allergy and partly just mother’s instinct. She gave Caroline some Benadryl and paged her pediatrician. “I stared at her the whole night while she was asleep,” she said. “…

How do parents and teachers separate the harmful from the harmless when it comes to kids picking on other kids?
Maybe you were never on the receiving end of the class bully. Or you stood by, grateful not to be in the crosshairs, as another child was ridiculed. Whatever the case, bullying is as alive today as it was when we were in school. Except the stakes are higher. It comes in the form of anonymous posts on social networking sites or threatening messages left on a child's cell phone. The text is mightier than the sword. This new age of bullying has forced teachers and parents to take a more proactive approach. The "kids will be kids" adage doesn't work today and we can no longer use it to disregard malicious and harmful behavior. Schools take the zero tolerance approach, and that's a good thing. But does it soften our children and teach them not …

The Patch Moms Council discusses the right time to take your child to a wake or funeral.
Death is something we all share. Despite this commonality, we all look at it differently. Especially when young children are involved. Making the call as to whether a child is ready to experience a wake or funeral can be a difficult one. Will we traumatize the child? Will he or she be angry with our decision in the future? So we asked: When is a child ready to experience a wake and funeral? Here's what our Moms Council had to say. Deb Melchert, Tinley Park "If you believe the children understand the concept of death, then I would ask if they would be "comfortable" at the wake. If they understand why they are "on display," I don't see a problem with them being there. Talk with your kids and explain the process of the wake and funeral, then …

The Orland Park-based foundation collects toys for children suffering from cancer and recently saw a 20 percent increase in donations.
Kristine Bulian knew what her family had to do. About two and a half years ago, her daughter Hannah was admitted to Advocate Hope Children's Hospital for intense chemotherapy to treat leukemia. It was her 12th birthday. When the doctors found out it was Hannah's birthday, she immediately got to pick a present from the "treasure chest," a selection of toys donated to hospitals across the country from the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation. During 16 hospital stays that followed after her birthday, the staff would bring her toys to choose from on days when she needed rest, especially after a difficult procedure. "It was significant. She always smiled," Kristine Bulian said. "The hospital staff would always look for the perfect …

Nabeha, it sounds like you have a great handle on how to help your child through bullying situations. What advice do you give your kids if/when they're in a tough spot with a bully? If someone spits ignorance in their direction? And for others, what if your child has been accused of bullying? How do you show them the error of their ways?   more ›
