Tinley Man Crosses Paths with Cardinal George on Road to Priesthood

Chicago's Cardinal Francis George was in Rome to participate in Khalil Hattar's elevation to acolyte on his journey to priesthood, as George traveled to Rome to join other cardinals in choosing a new pope.

The timing couldn’t have been better for 25-year-old Tinley Park resident Khalil Hattar.  Hattar was one of 60 seminarians who transitioned to acolytes during a Monday Mass in Rome, Chicago Tribune reports. Cardinal Francis George and others from around the world gathered to discuss issues facing the church, and to begin the early steps of choosing a new pope. His arrival allowed for his participation in Hattar's journey to priesthood. “It's wonderful,” Hattar said of having his own archbishop present. “It reminds me of the people back home I'm going to serve.”  Hattar, a former St. Elizabeth Seton parishioner, is of Jordanian and Palestinian descent. When he advances to deacon, next and finally priesthood, he will be only one of a small …

Oh Come, All Ye Faithful: Where Do You Gather?

Please join the discussion on Patch and leave reviews in our business directory.

Each week Patch focuses on a different product or service. This week, we're doing something a little different. With Hanukkah starting this week and Christmas this weekend, many readers will be visiting places of worship. New residents might even be looking for the right place for them. Because Patch has an extensive directory of businesses, we want all of our readers to benefit from your experience the way your neighbors do. Calvary Church Reinvents Itself After 125 Years

The church’s new facility on opens to the public on Sunday, after 10 years leading up to the opening.

After 10 years, the congregation of Calvary Church will enter their new church home, after planning, saving and being obedient to God for such a time. “It was about ten years ago this vision started,” says Ron Ovitt, the Executive Pastor for Calvary Church in Orland Park. “The first campaign was called Harvest Time. We did a study then planned and held our first financial campaign called Growing in Grace.  We had looked at other property years before, along I-80 and then the economy fell apart. We found this property about three years ago and built this church in a year. It took all that time to…

UPDATE: Police Arrest Sex Offender Sunday at St. Alexander

A parishioner's complaint prompted police to arrest a convicted sex criminal from Orland Park during Sunday services on Sept. 19.

Police arrested a registered sex offender at St. Alexander Church's Sunday Mass after a parent noticed the man among the worshipers. Anthony J. Olszowka, 38, of the 13600 block of South Howe Drive in Orland Park, was inside the Palos Heights church but outside of the sanctuary when police took him into custody on Sept. 19, police said. The same main entrance is used for both the church and St. Alexander Elementary School, and that was grounds for arrest, police said. Olszowka is charged with unlawful presence within a school zone. "At no time were any kids harmed," said Palos Heights police Detective Gerard Wodka. Olszowka was convicted of two counts of indecent solicitation of a child and one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault …
