Class 8A Football: Brother Rice Win Over Sandburg is a Walk(er) in the Park

Brother Rice 35, Sandburg 14: Martez Walker and Andrew Walker combined for all but 11 yards of the Crusaders' entire offensive output in a first-round Class 8A playoff victory over the Eagles.

Breaking It Down: Brother Rice jumped out to a 28-0 lead over Sandburg Friday night on the backs of Andrew Walker and Martez Walker. The two rushed for a combined 330 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Crusaders' 35-14 victory over the Eagles in the first round of the Class 8A football playoffs. At the outset, Sandburg seemed to get the momentem by shutting down the Crusaders offense, forcing a three-and-out. The Eagles marched down the field, but were stuffed after attempting to punch the ball in on a fourth-and-goal play in the first quarter. After that moment, it was all Crusaders and Martez Walker. He scored from 28 yards out in the second quarter to cap a 99-yard Crusader drive. Martez Walker found paydirt again from 14 yards out…

Football: Sandburg's Melone Helps Eagles Rush Into Playoffs

Alec Melone got the start for the Eagles on Senior Night, and his huge performance helped make the difference against Homewood-Flossmoor.

Alec Melone has seen a lot of action for Sandburg this year, but on Friday night in Orland Park, he rose to the occasion in the Eagles' 31-28 win over Homewood-Flossmoor on Senior Night.  With the Eagles up by just three points with about 10 minutes left in the game, Sandburg’s offense was driving after its defense had just stopped H-F at the Eagles’ 20-yard line. And then, in an instant, one play sealed the deal. Melone ran a sweep to the right and saw open field. A key block by Nick Lehnerer gave Melone running room and the senior running back found the end zone from 49 yards out. Melone, who was filling in for the injured Mike Rago, finished the night with 140 yards on the ground. "The offensive line had been making enormous holes the …

Suddenly, Sandburg Football Playoff Picture is a Bit Muddled

After dropping a heart-breaker to Lockport in overtime on Friday night, Sandburg could need a victory in its regular-season finale to reach the IHSA football playoffs.

It was an edge-of-your seat ending Friday night at Lockport. Sandburg had a late 21-14 lead, but Lockport's Billy Reed was able to run the two-minute offense with great success to tie things at 21. Ted Vergados' 52-yard field goal attempt as time expired was blocked, and the Porters went on to win 27-24 in overtime.  With one week left in the regular season, many questions remain. Can the Eagles make the playoffs by getting the critical sixth win? They could make it with just five, but a sixth would assure them a spot. So, how does the picture look? Lincoln-Way East has clinched at least a tie for the Southwest Suburban Blue Conference crown following a 42-0 victory over Joliet Central. Lockport is in the playoffs by virtue of its win over…

Unlike Providence’s 5-4 (projected with a likely loss to Mt Carmel) season, a 5-4 (projected with a likely loss to HF) Sandburg lacks playoff points. That's what happens when you play a weak schedule in a weak conference. Sure those cupcakes are tasty going down, but leave you empty come week 10. Meanwhile, the entire CCL Blue conference (St Rita, Loyola, Mt Carmel, Br. Rice, Providence) …   more ›

Football: Sandburg Drops Heart-Breaker to Lockport

Lockport 27, Sandburg 24 (OT): The Porters scored with less than1 minute left in regulation to tie game and then clipped the Eagles in overtime.

Breaking It Down: The game might have started with a 96-yard touchdown return of the opening kickoff by Lockport's Dexter Taylor, but it took extra time to settle the matchup between Sandburg and Lockport Friday night. It was senior night for the Porters, and the Eagles were hoping to spoil the celebration. And they came extremely close, but fell short in overtime 27-24. After that opening kick return, Sandburg held Lockport in check for much of the first half. In fact, Sandburg's Anthony Adams connected with Lemonte Booker for a 22-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter to tie things up. Lockport quarterback Billy Reed a added a 3-yard touchdown run late in the second half, capitalizing on a Sandburg turnover. The Eagles trailed at…

Bolingbrook Option Had Sandburg Football Defense 'Huff-ing' in Second Half

Sandburg's defense stood in the first half. But, in the second, the Bolingbrook option attack of Aaron Bailey and Jaden Huff was too much for the Eagles to handle in Friday night's Southwest Suburban Blue football showdown.

In the first half on Friday night in Orland Park, the Sandburg football team's defense was its dominant self. The Eagles shut out Bolingbrook for more than 30 minutes, in fact, the stretch running into the third quarter during a Southwest Suburban Blue showdown. It was a different story in the second half, however. The Raiders made adjustments and handed things over to sophomore running back Jaden Huff. Huff, in his second year of varsity play already, rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns. All of the touchdowns came in the last 16 minutes, and the Raiders went on to win 27-3. Bolingbrook had Sandburg on its heels with an option attack, found a few holes in the Eagles' vaunted 'D' and kept them on their toes tyring to adjust on the fly…

Football: Second-Half Surge Enables Bolingbrook to Pull Away from Sandburg

Bolingbrook 27, Sandburg 3: In the end, the Raiders' explosive option game was too much for the Eagles' defense to handle.

Breaking It Down: On Friday night in Orland Park, Sandburg was able to do what few others have done before, stop Bolingbrook from scoring in the first half. But the Raiders erupted for 27 points in the second half and defeated the Eagles 27-3 in a Southwest Suburban Blue football showdown on Friday night. There was no scoring in the first half, though both teams had chances. Sandburg kicker Ted Vergados missed 49- and 20-yard field goal attempts. The Raiders had a fourth-and-15 on the Sandburg 17 and, lacking a reliable kicker, elected to go for it. But the Eagles' defense came up with a big stop. The second half opened with Vergados stepping up and nailing a 53-yard field goal. Immediately following the field goal, Bolingbrook's Aaron …

Sandburg Football's Backup QB Steps Up When His Number Called

Eagles backup quarterback Ron Johnson proved he could move his feet and the ball during a 41-0 victory over Joliet Central on Friday night.

Ron Johnson, a Sandburg junior, saw limited action in a 37-0 football victory at Stagg in Week 2, but he was limited to clipboard duty for the next three weeks. All that changed in Friday night's 41-0 homecoming win over Joliet Central. This time, the 6-foot, 145-pound Johnson made his presence felt. He rushed for 95 yards on six carries. He scored the first varsity touchdown of his career on a 9-yard run. And he changed the play at the line of scrimmage. "It felt really good," Johnson said. "I had to call an audible at the line. I checked out of the original play (because of Joliet Central's defensive alignment). I just cut back and a path opened right up. "My receivers blocked for me and that was it. I'm glad my coach trusted me to take …

Football: Explosive First Half Fuels Sandburg Rout of Joliet Central

Sandburg 41, Joliet Central 0: The Eagles attacked on the ground, through the air and their defense limited the Steelmen to just 1 yard in the first half.

Breaking It Down: Sandburg set the tone early on in a 41-0 victory over Joliet Central with Lemonte Booker breaking a 38-yard touchdown run on the Eagles first possession Friday night. Booker scored again on a 3-yard run in the second quarter as the Eagles celebrated homecoming in high style. Anthony Adams completed 4-of-6 passes for 89 yards and three touchdowns. He found both Nick Lehnerer and Trevor Dapkus from 33 yards out. Adams also connected with Joe Fischer for a 13-yard score. Sandburg led 34-0 at the half, and Eagles coach Dave Wierzal rested his starters in the second half. The starting defense limited Joliet Central to just 1 net yard of offense in the first half. The backup defense was fooled a couple of times on some Steelmen…

Five Memorable Moments in L-W East vs. Sandburg Football Series

Some standouts have played on both sides during the first 10 years of the Lincoln-Way East vs. Sandburg football series. Remember Terry Kowalski? How about Mike Cholipski?

The football series between Lincoln-Way East and Sandburg remains a relatively young one as the schools will be meeting Friday night in Frankfor for the 11th consecutive year. "I know at one point this game was a pretty serious rivalry," Sandburg coach Dave Wierzal said. "I don't know if it still has that same focus because the rivalry has changed with new schools being brought into the conference, but it's still a very important game for us." It's been a one-sided series as the Griffins are 9-2 lifetime against the Eagles, and even in defeat have been competitive. The two victories by the Eagles have been decided by only a single point (23-22 in 2007) and by two points (12-10 in 2004 regular season). Meanwhile, when on the winning end, …

The 2001 game is the one that is etched in my mind. Seeing the kids kneeling on the ground holding hands on the sidelines and the anticipation in the stands. Only thing that was remotely like that was the score in the 2005 state championship game at the end.   more ›

Football: Sandburg Survives Scare from Joliet West

Sandburg 35, Joliet West 28: The Eagles defense came up huge when it needed to, returning a fumble for a TD and recovering another fumble near the goal line.

Breaking It Down: Sandburg High School’s football team survived a barn-burner against Joliet West on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles stopped the host Tigers on a promising drive in the final 90 seconds to preserve a 35-28 victory to open SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue play. Lemonte Booker opened the scoring for the Eagles on just the second play from scrimmage, breaking off a 65-yard touchdown run. The Tigers answered back with a big play of their own, as Matthew Koran picked off a pass by Sandburg quarterback Anthony Adams and returned it 25 yards. That set up the first of two 1-yard touchdown runs for quarterback Zack DiVarco. Those series set the tone of the back-and-forth game, which would be tied twice during the first half, …
