D135 Projecting Enrollment to Drop by 59 Students and More (Live Blog Transcript)

Paul Howell announced his retirement, and a new director of curriculum was approved by the Orland School District 135 board Monday night. Read our live blog transcript of both the committee of the whole and regular meetings.

Update Orland School District 135 may be looking at fewer enrolled students during the 2013-2014 school year, if current staff projections hold true. During Monday night’s committee of the whole meeting, board members heard the first enrollment projection for the next school year, which has 59 less students than current enrollment. Several variables, however, can change the number before August, said D135 Human Resources Director Julie Oberwise. Kindergarten enrollment will not be clear until far closer to August, and certain segments of students are recorded differently, such as honors students in the junior highs. But if the numbers hold, the district might have to lose four full-time teachers and one half-time kindergarten teacher to …

Thunder, why do facts trouble you so? As you said, i can't run for the Board or even vote for them. All I can do is present facts and ideas for consderation of those who care enough to get involved. When someone presenting facts and ideas "bothers" you, it's pretty clear that facts don't fit your agenda. One of us is trying to make the voters in 135 well informed, the other (you) apparently …   more ›

Moraine Valley Expects Regular Enrollment Drop, Rise in Noncredit Students

College president says the poor economy, the shrinking availability of financial aid and the high cost of textbooks are factors in keeping some students away.

With only a week before the new semester begins, Moraine Valley Community College is anticipating a slight drop in student enrollment but looking positively at historical and noncredit registration numbers. “The best we can hope for is a flat enrollment,” Moraine Valley President Vernon Crawley told the school's board of education on Monday, “although my best estimate … is probably in the range of a 2-percent down.” He attributed that to the poor economy, the shrinking availability of financial aid, and the high cost of textbooks. “I think some of them don’t believe that going to school is going to generate a job for them,” he said. This and other topics will be discussed during a trip to Moraine Valley’s campus by Illinois Lt. Governor …

D135 To Receive $5.3M Capital Improvement Grant

Also at Monday's meeting, board members discussed falling enrollment and rehired a technology consultant.

It took seven years, but Orland School District 135 crossed the first of two hurdles last week to receive a $5.3 million capital improvement grant from the state. On Monday, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services John Reiniche told members of the school board that he had applied for the grant in the midst of building additions at Liberty School, Prairie School and Jerling Jr. High. Although construction on those projects has completed, the money will be spent on safety improvements and technology initiatives, he said. However, the state is under no obligation to immediately distribute the grant. The Illinois Capital Development Board, which approved the application, does not distribute funds, Reiniche said. He attributed the delay …

Over 5 Years, Enrollment in District 135 Drops by 591 Students

Staff believe a stagnant economy and housing market have led to a decline in numbers since 2005.

Projections for the number of students attending Orland School District 135 are continuing in a downward direction that began in 2005. The total number of students enrolled throughout all 10 District 135 schools fell by 591, from 5,856 at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year to 5,265 for the 2010-11 year. Board of Education members were given a report at the Feb. 14 committee meeting on enrollment numbers that illustrated the decline. Why the drop? “I think it’s the housing market,” said Colleen Schultz, District 135 assistant superintendent of student services and director of special education. “It really started when the economy started going flat. We’re hoping that when the economy comes around enrollment will rise again, especially…
