Police: Bomb Squad Determined Old Grenade Was a Dud

A man sorting through his deceased father’s property in Orland Park found a grenade, and then brought it to the Orland Park Police Department for disposal, where bomb squad technicians found the grenade was not functioning.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Police Bomb Squad was called out to the Orland Park Police Department Thursday, after a man brought in an old grenade that turned out to be a dud. A man cleaning out his deceased father’s residence in Orland Park found the grenade, and brought it to the police department to turn in for disposal around 4:30 p.m., according to Orland Park Police Commander John Keating. A police supervisor then took the grenade out of the station to the parking lot, for the bomb squad to investigate, Keating said. Bomb technicians determined the grenade was a “non-functioning military grenade, and they disposed of it” about an hour later, Keating said.
