This Weekend: Block Party, Dodgeball and Shakespeare

Theater, music, sports, kid friendly and charitable events this weekend, July 28 - 31, in the Orland, Palos, Tinley and Oak Forest area.

Don't let the department stores fool you - it is still summer! If you don't believe us, check the thermometer. So avert your eyes from the "back-to-school" sales, put down that discounted plastic pumpkin and get outside while you still can. This weekend is full of warm weather activities that will keep you and the kids entertained. Kids Dodgeball Tournament July 29, Ages 8 - 10: 1-3pm, ages 11-14: 3:15-5:15pm | Palos Park Recreation Center Bring friends down for a few hours of dodgeball and a chance to win prizes. There will be a blind draw for teams. Ninth Annual “Friday for Julie” Walk and Fundraiser July 29, 6pm - 11pm | Orland Park Civic Center Walk to support research for the eradication of leukemia and other blood cancers. …

Parents Groups Donate Close to $160,000 to D135 In Last School Year

Two parent organizations raised money for field trips, music programs and other activities.

Thanks to generous support from two parent organizations, the Orland School District 135 accepted donations in the amount of $159,929 raised by two groups--Music Parents and Parents for Education (PFE). The total amount is a sum of what was raised at each of the 10 school within District 135. According to Superintendent Paul Howell, similar amounts of money are raised at each school.   Howell, who meets with the two groups throughout the year, described them during Monday night's Board of Education meeting as "two of the most flawless organizations I've seen." The funding goes toward costs for assemblies, author visits and other activities during the year, including some requested by the students. Music Parents assist with raising money …

Signs of Life at the Chef’s Auction

Orland Park’s 11th Annual Chef’s Auction was a night of food, drink and commiserating, but all for a cause.

Frann Carnivele-Sidlow has two ages. “I’m 47, or one-and-a-half, depending on how you look at it,” she said. Carnivele-Sidlow was 30-years-old when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time she was “on top of the world.” She had just met who would become her husband, and was busy directing theater and singing. After treatments, she went into remission, started a family and got on with life. But about a year-and-a-half ago, the cancer returned. This time a mastectomy was performed, but before she was clear a tumor on her thyroid had to be taken out as well. “Cancer has no prejudices,” Carnivele-Sidlow said. “It doesn’t care what color you are, what sex you are, how old you are.
