The Eagles' girls basketball squad doesn't have a player averaging more than seven points a game, so a balanced scoring attack was key Wednesday night.
Teamwork is the formula for success for Sandburg’s girls basketball team. With no player averaging more than seven points per game, the Eagles boast a balanced scoring attack, one that came through Wednesday night in the team’s 45-43 upset over Bloom in the Shepard Regional semifinals. Sophomore guard Carly Katalinic and junior guard Katie Winchel led the Eagles with 11 points each, while senior guard Samantha Holler had 10 points. Katalinic said teamwork and on-time passes were the key to the comeback. “We came together as a team,” Katalinic said. “And we told each other we weren’t going to lose and we pulled together and we started connecting our passes.” Great teamwork usually calls for contributions off the bench. Wednesday night, …

Sandburg 45, Bloom 43. The Eagles mounted a furious comeback to defeat the Blazing Trojans and advance to meet Marist in the Shepard Regional championship game.
The Hot Read: Sandburg battled back from a big halftime deficit Wednesday night to upset Bloom in the Shepard Regional Semifinals in Palos Heights. Bloom led 15-12 after the first quarter and extended its lead in the second quarter behind an offensive explosion from senior guard Angenay Williams, who scored nine points in the quarter. Bloom led 30-19 at halftime. Bloom’s offense slowed down in the third quarter, and Sandburg took advantage of Blazing Trojan turnovers to fight its way back into the game. Eagles junior forward Jen Pache played a big role off the bench in the quarter, scoring six straight points to cut the Bloom lead to 33-28.
