Let it Snow? It is On Google, But Maybe Not Here

Christmas may be green in Chicago's south suburbs, but in the meantime, check out the cool search engine effect.

Will it snow in the south suburbs this holiday weekend? Maybe not, but you can get some of the Christmas magic on Google. Join millions in typing "let it snow" in a Google search and watch what happens. You can clear it up by hitting the "defrost" button or by "scraping" with your mouse. According to forecasts from the National Weather Service in Romeoville, the Chicago area might not see much snow. This map shows little to no snow coverage throughout the area now, and most forecasts say we'll be without a White Christmas. The Weather Channel's forecast map shows that the Chicago area will be without a White Christmas. That doesn't necessarily mean we won't have snow; on that map, "White Christmas" means at least an inch of snow. According…

Readers Picked the Worst Christmas Song: Help Patch Editors Sing It

We gave Patch readers a choice of 13 of the most odious holiday "classics" with the task of picking the worst for Patch editors to sing on Christmas Day.

When we asked Patch readers to pick the worst, most annoying, most horrifyingly, brain-fryingly jingle-bellicose holiday song for us to perform, we didn't realize something. They would. Yup, among the 13 options we gave readers last week in our What's the Worst Christmas Song poll, you guys aimed right toward the ones we feared. Now we've got to perform it for a Christmas Day video, and you can help. The winner as of 8 p.m. Monday was... A TIE! Yes, readers were split 25-25 on Last Christmas by Wham! and I Farted on Santa's Lap. As Last Christmas was winning earlier in the day, the Fantastipatch Editors Choir and Traveling Bear Cavalry will be performing George Michael's 1984 classic about a guy who got dumped on Dec. 26 and gets all …

How to Avoid an Exploding Turkey When Using a Deep Fryer

Underwriters Laboratories offers safety tips for deep frying your turkey without burning your garage down.

If you’re like 88 percent of the rest of the country you’re probably going to eat some turkey this Thanksgiving. While most of us will enjoy an oven-roasted turkey, some hardcore Thanksgiving aficionados have been deep-frying their birds in turkey fryers despite their inherent dangers. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more than 2,000 residential fires are reported on Thanksgiving. A number of these fires are caused by botched turkey fryer mishaps. WATCH THE UL VIDEO of a turkey fryer bursting into flames. UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global product safety organization, discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled fryers that immerse whole turkeys into hot oil. UL still won’t certify turkey fryers as they are designed. And …
