Hoops: Give These Girls a High Five

Sports Editor Ron Kremer ranks the top area girls basketball teams from 1-5, plus the five knocking on the door.

1. Marian Catholic (19-3): Coach Annie Basic-Byrne was disappointed with the Spartans’ performance in a 50-44 loss to Nicolet (Wis.) on Monday at the McDonald’s Shootout. Simone Law was limited to 10 points. Next: Saturday at Westchester St. Joseph. 2. Lincoln-Way East (15-4): Kelly McGovern had 12 points, five assists and three steals in the Griffins’ 61-42 victory over Lockport. She was playing in her final game before undergoing season-ending surgery. Next: Tonight vs. Bolingbrook. 3. Marist (17-4): One night it’s JeTaun Rouse. The next, it’s Leah Bolton. The RedHawks have size and speed. Next: Saturday vs. Lincoln Park. 4. Homewood-Flossmoor (15-5): Memphis recruit Jailyn Norris scored 27 points in an 87-39 victory over Lincoln-Way …

1. Marian Catholic (14-2): Spartans look to enforce (Simone) Law in Sweet 16 tourney game vs. Buffalo Grove tonight. Law had 28 points and nine rebounds in a loss to Montini. 2. Lincoln-Way East (11-3): Griffins defeated district rival Lincoln-Way North to win Medieval Classic. Kelly McGovern, Taylor Johnson and Caitlin McMahon were all-tournament selections. 3. Marist (12-4): RedHawks' JeTaun Rouse continues to rock the house. She had 23 points, six rebounds and four assists in 52-35 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor. She followed that up with a 17-point performance in Marist's 64-43 victory over Providence on Wednesday. 4. Homewood-Flossmoor (13-4): Vikings put forth great effort, hang with Bolingbrook for a quarter and then drop 61-40 …

Marian Girl Builds Golf Championship Brick by Brick

Junior medalist leads Marian Catholic to second-place finish in golf regional; Homewood-Flossmoor and Lincoln-Way East also advance to next week's sectional.

FLOSSMOOR -- Sylvie Brick is a born competitor. Brick, the individual medalist at Wednesday's Marian Catholic Class AA girls golf regional, led her Spartans to a second-place finish in the team chase. She enjoys fighting back the nerves that come with playing in a big tournament. "I felt relaxed all day and even if those nerves came up, I just kind of shook them out," Brick said. "I like to remind myself that feeling is why I play golf. You have to embrace those nerves and those butterflies." Brick, a junior, shot an even-par 71, while Marian finished the day with a 334. Defending state champ Homewood-Flossmoor won the regional title, which was at the Coyote Run Golf Course, with a 294. "Everybody went out and did what they had to do," …
