Update, 11:30 p.m., Monday, June 4, 2012 Five people who saved a drowning man in Lake Sedgewick last week received a “public pat on the back” during Monday night’s Orland Park Village Board meeting. Albert Kulicz, Mackenzie Smith, Andrea Dunn, Meghan Carmody and Taylor Calzaretta, were each presented with a lifesaver award from the village that read: “in recognition and appreciation of your selfless heroism in saving the life of a drowning individual, presented this Fourth day in June 2012.” On May 29, Kulicz, from Bridgeview, and Smith, of Orland Park, jumped into Lake Sedgewick after hearing cries from help from a 33-year-old Tinley Park man. Names in the News: Lifesavers Aid Drowning Man at Lake Sedgewick

A man calling for help while in the water at Centennial Park was lucky a few brave people were there, heard his cries and pulled him out of the water Tuesday.

Albert Kulicz and Mackenzie Smith were not likely planning on jumping into the water Tuesday. Swimming also happens to be forbidden at Lake Sedgewick, but that didn’t stop a 33-year-old man of Tinley Park from getting into the deep waters. Authorities praised the quick efforts of Kulicz, 21, of Bridgeview, and Smith, 16, from Orland Park, for jumping into the water after hearing cries for help, pulling the man to land, and with the help of 16-year-old Andrea Dunn and 17-year-old Taylor Calzaretta, getting him on land as emergency personnel arrived on scene. “I clearly believe if it wasn’t for their quick actions, this man surely would’ve drowned,” Orland Park Police Commander John Keating said Tuesday. “At great risk to their own safety, …

Man, Teen Girl Save Man from Drowning in Lake Sedgewick

A 21-year-old man and 16-year-old girl came to the aid of a man authorities said “surely would’ve drowned” had they not helped him Tuesday in Orland Park.

Authorities credited the quick actions of people who were enjoying a day at Lake Sedgewick for pulling a drowning man out of the water Tuesday. A 33-year-old Tinley Park man was heard shouting for help while in the water on the east side of the lake around 12:45 p.m., according to Orland Park Police Commander John Keating. Twenty one-year-old Albert Kulicz from Bridgeview and Mackenzie Smith,16, of Orland Park jumped in to help the man, while a friend of the girl called 911. Other friends went from the boat launch area of the lake to where the man was seen in the water to help, according to the Orland Fire Protection District.
