Waste Management Offers Lower Trash Rates (Live Blog Transcript)

Update Orland Park is scheduled to make a final vote in June on a new waste hauling contract that could include lower prices for the first two years of service in a proposed 10-year contract.  A new pricing plan from Waste Management was presented during Monday night's public works committee meeting that included a starting rate of $18.58 per month for waste and recycling hauling. The village's current rate is $19.40. The pricing plan has the monthly rate going higher than $19.40 in its third year, though the overall changes to prices for Waste Management's new contract over 10 years is $1,821,908 lower than the pricing plan presented in early January, according to village documents.  The new waste hauling contract also includes recycling …

Board Members Clash Over Park School Incident and More (Live Blog)

Orland School District 135 board members will be voting on a resolution involving closed session minutes and audio recordings, during Monday night’s regular meeting. In the board’s last meeting before Tuesday’s election, where three incumbents and five challengers are seeking four open seats, current members will also be voting on at-will staff employment and several improvement projects detailed during the March 21 Committee of the Whole meeting. The projects include asphalt paving, carpeting and roofing. The district has declined to offer any further specifics on what will be discussed at future meetings beyond the released agendas. The village will be holding a survey on the website throughout April that is open to the public.  Take the survey and tell the village what you think about its online presence. Update Orland School District 135 board members unanimously voted in favor of two promotions for current staff members. Dave Snyder, who has served as Liberty School's principal since Jan. 2011, was appointed to assistant director of curriculum. Snyder has worked within the district since 2007 and started in education in 1999. Beth Hayden was appointed to assistant principal of Century Junior High. She previously worked as a 6th grade language arts teacher.   During the committee portion of Thursday night's meeting, the district's technology update plan was shown. New Water Rate Increases Passed by Village Board and More (Live Blog Transcript)

Update, 10 p.m., Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 Orland Park trustees voted in favor of an increase in water rates Monday night, to defray rising costs from Chicago and Oak Lawn and to maintain Orland's local infrastructure. Rates for properties using 9,000 gallons per month or less will be $4.65 per 1,000 gallons, between 9,000 and 18,000 gallons costs $5.62 and greater than 18,000 gallons costs $6.59. The new rates begin immediately and will include water use back to Jan. 1. The increase is expected to cost an average Orland Park household an additional $64.26 per year. I can see stopping txting while driving, I can even see only hands free phone usage only while driving too, but what's next.........no changing radio stations or putting in a CD while your driving? Water going up, don't complain, I'm in unicorporated Orland and pay a heck of a lot more for it than Orland proper. Stutz Voted in as D135's Next Superintendent and More (Live Blog Transcript)

Update The Orland School District 135 Board of Education voted in favor of Dr. Janet Stutz becoming the next superintendent, with no votes against. Board member Ann Gentile did not attend the meeting due to a family medical issue.  Stutz begins on July 1, 2013, and will be earning an annual salary of $175,000. "I am thrilled to be here and I look forward to collaborating with the schools and community as we have celebrations and face challenges," Stutz said. "The transition for me begins tomorrow as a sign goes up in my front yard reading for sale. My husband and I look forward to moving closer to the community here for the next phase in our lives." Water Rates Increase Sent to Full Board and More (Live Blog Transcript)

Update Orland Park property owners will likely see an increase in water costs in 2013, and again during the next two subsequent years. The full village board will be voting at the Jan. 21 meeting to raising water rates by about 50 to 60 cents per 1,000 gallons, after the finance committee discussed the rates Monday night and approved sending it to the full board for a vote.  Rates for properties using 9,000 gallons per month or less will be $4.65, between 9,000 and 18,000 gallons costs $5.62 per 1,000 gallons and greater than 18,000 gallons costs $6.59. D135 to Request 3 Percent Higher Tax Levy (Live Blog Transcript)

Orland School District 135 will ask for a slightly higher figure than in 2011 to offset costs built into to the latest teacher contract, which is tied to a figure that caps what school districts can request in tax money. Read our meeting transcript.

Update, 11:35 p.m., Monday, Nov. 5, 2012 Orland School District 135 will be asking for more money from property owners for the next fiscal year, in order to cover costs associated with the latest teachers' contract. The district will be asking for a three percent higher tax levy, which equates to about $1.9 million. The levy is equal to the Consumer Price Index, which in turn is the cap of how much school districts can additionally request in a tax levy per year.  The most recent teachers' contract for D135 has salary increases tied to CPI, which is the main need for the levy, said D135 Asst. I think our Property taxes for schools is high enough already. It is time to start cutting costs than raising taxes every year. I have seen my taxes go from 2900 to 3900 in 3 years on a small townhouse. This is getting ridiculous.   more ›
