"and our schools are the envy of all other nearby towns" You are joking, right? I think you'll find few Palos 118 or 128 parents who wish their kids were in 135. If they wanted their kids to go to those schools, they would have moved there. District 230 high schools? I don't think you'd find too many students at Lincoln Way or Lockport who'd want to switch, since their ACTs are as good or better …   more ›

Orland Park Village Board Candidates on Keeping a Tight Budget

Four hopefuls running for a seat on the Orland Park Village Board of Trustees share their views on a budget that maintains the village’s qualities, while not overburdening taxpayers.

The following question was asked of all candidates running for the Orland Park Village Board of Trustees. Answers are listed in the order they were received. How do you propose keeping a tighter budget that doesn’t burden taxpayers, while keeping Orland Park accessible, competitive and desirable? John Fotopoulos First, we have to eliminate wasteful spending in the budget. We need a strong police department, public works and recreation programs as well. This is a few of the reasons why we moved to Orland Park. However, I believe the rates residents pay to use the amenities should be reduced and the nonresident rates should be increased. Residents pay the taxes and should be able to afford using the facilities. Brad O’Halloran I think that …

Orland Park Village Board Candidates on the Main Street Triangle

The four running for a place on the Orland Park Village Board of Trustees offer their views on how plans should proceed with the Main Street Triangle in our Patch election questionnaire.

The following question was asked of all candidates running for the Orland Park Village Board of Trustees. Answers are listed in the order they were received. Construction has begun on the Main Street Triangle. With units within the Ninety 7 Fifty apartment complex soon to be opened, what else should be built or established within the triangle area to ensure the extensive investment will be worthwhile? John Fotopoulos Let me start by stating I do not support the decision to build almost 300 apartments in the Main Street development. With that said, the remainder of the development should concentrate on attracting high end restaurants and specialty stores to cater to all the residents of Orland Park. Brad O’Halloran Given the walkability of …

Village OKs $107K Orland Plaza Demolition

Orland Park trustees voted to give the contract to a Tinley Park company during the March 18 board meeting.

Another large piece of the former Orland Plaza near 143rd Street and LaGrange Road will soon be no more, the Sun-Times Media reports.  Trustees approved a $107,000 contract with Bechstein Construction Corp. of Tinley Park to demolish much of the now village-owned plaza, excluding Gee-Schussier Insurance and Marquette Bank on the east end. Those properties will remain through 2013. The property was purchased as part of the village’s Main Street Triangle redevelopment plan. Future development plans call for a mixture or residential, office and retail spaces. Get the rest of the story from the Sun-Times Media. More Orland Plaza Demolition Scheduled for Late March

The Orland Park Village Board will vote on their next meeting to tear down the middle of the former Orland Plaza building, making way for further work on the Main Street Triangle.

The next phase of demolition on the former Orland Plaza building is slated to begin later in March, pending a final approval from the Orland Park Village Board. Bechstein Construction Corporation of Tinley Park is the village staff’s recommended choice for the demolition work, with the lowest offer out of 10 total bids. For $106,900, the company offered to tear down the structure from where the Plaza Café used to reside up to the Gee-Schussler Insurance office, which will remain for the time being along with the Marquette Bank office. No plans have been decided upon for what will be built in that space once the structure section is removed, said Orland Park Village Manager Paul Grimes. “”We’re still working on that,” Grimes said. “We’re …

Ben, where is that update you promised in The Patch regarding the leasing rates for this money pit project? Hasn't the Village coughed up the figures thus far? I saw NO direct reference to this project in the so-called "State of the Village" slides posted earlier this month. It is OUR $65 million that's at risk, not His Majesty Danny's!   more ›

Orland Park Village Board trustees will talk fees for using a new dog park scheduled to open within Centennial Park later in the year, during Monday night's village board meeting. The village's Parks Department has proposed charging Orland Park and Orland Township residents $25 per year for park use, and $50 for non residents. The initial fee will be for one dog. Residents who want to bring multiple dogs to the park would pay an additional $10 per dog, while non-residents would pay $20 per added dog, if the board approves the rates. Bids for demolishing another portion of the former Orland Plaza will also be up for discussion Monday night. This contract would cover demolition of the remaining structures down to the basement and/or slab, …

Orland Park is long overdue for a dog park. I was part of the city's efforts to win the PetSafe dog park and there are thousands of dog owners in Orland Park. We have a park in almost every neighborhood for kids. There's a park for skaters, swimmers, ice skaters and everyone else. It's time for our four legged friends to have a safe place to play. I'm looking forward to it.   more ›

‘We’re Ecstatic’: Miroballi Shoes Opens New Orland Park Location

The Orland Park business has spent the past 37 years in town at three different locations. Now owning their own building, they are looking forward to remaining in town in their revamped store.

The Miroballis have taken a long road to keep their family-owned and operated shoe store in Orland Park. Miroballi Shoes opened first in Orland Square Mall in 1976, and stayed until 1997 when they moved within the Orland Plaza. When plans to convert an area bordered between the Metra Southwest Service tracks, LaGrange Road and 143rd Street into the Main Street Triangle moved ahead in summer 2011, forcing the businesses to relocate, the family knew they wanted to stay in Orland Park. On Sept. 27, the family opened up their biggest location in town yet, among a new 10,000 square-foot plaza on the northwest corner of 144th Place and LaGrange Road that will house three other tenants. “We’re ecstatic, number one because we’re still in the …
