Orland Park Patch in Running for a Lisagor Award

We are finalists in the Online Business Reporting category for our Main Street Triangle project (still ongoing). Cartoonist, copy editor and all-around talent guru Chuck Ingwersen is also up for his Sunday Comics.

The first journalism award ceremony I attended was in a very large room. There was passion in that brightly lit, chatter-filled room in fall 2007, and a determination to keep moving forward. Even though signs became more apparent that news media as we knew it then was going through a full-on depression, the people there were ready for a fight. In 2008, it was a diametrically different event. The room, a fraction of the size, was dark and quiet. That year, people were just lamenting sadly at the journalism world of before. On Friday, I will be going, along with Patch reporter/contributor Jesse Marx, to the 35th Annual Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism, and I am very proud to be going as a Patch editor. Working in a role where …

First Bond Sale for 9750 Project Going to Full Village Board

The Orland Park Finance Committee decided Monday to put the first bond sale proposal in front of the full board, so they can choose one of two ways to sell, and whether bonds will be sold locally to interested parties.

Update, 1:46 a.m. Tuesday, March 6 Orland Park's Village Board will be deciding soon on one of two ways to sell bonds, to pay off money borrowed for the Ninety 7 Fifty On the Park apartment complex. The two methods described during Monday night's committee meeting by Barbara Chevalier, vice president of Speer Financical, include selling through a competitive structure or through a negotiated sale. Competitive means a request for bids is put out, and lowest gets the bond sale. A negotiated sale would mean bringing in an underwriter to help broker the deal. Both are viable options, given a handful of factors, Chevalier said. Factors include the total money amount the village will be taking out, between $30 million and $40 million total in …

They're selling bonds to pay off money they borrowed..... Isn't a bond sale just government speak for "borrowing money?" Couldn't one say that they are borrowing money to pay off money they borrowed?   more ›

VIDEO: Former Randy’s Market Space First To Be Torn Down

Demolition on the Orland Plaza has begun, starting with the west end where the grocery store, Orland Park Bakery and Lang Lee II used to reside.

With the Orland Plaza land now under Orland Park’s control, a key piece of the Main Street Triangle plan is underway. To clear way for Ravinia Avenue to extend to the Circle Park, the west portion of the Orland Plaza is coming down. Construction crews started Monday morning taking apart the space occupied by Randy’s Market and Jerry’s IGA beforehand. The west end demolition is expected to take between three and four weeks. For further information on the Main Street Triangle, Plaza businesses and related court hearings, visit Orland Park Patch’s Triangle Central page.

I have lived in this community since 1985 and having establishments such as Randy's Market, the Orland Park Bakery, and Lang Lees that were constantly busy with patrons in a thriving mall was a big plus. It's so sad that to see once thriving businesses being removed in our state of economy. I am truly disappointed in the decision that was made to close down this thriving mall when I see so many …   more ›

On a positive note (could not find many), we are getting a new grocery store. Berkot's is opening. I will give them a try since Randy's is no longer an option. It's family owned and not a "big box" store. Does anyone know when that store will open?   more ›

Orland Plaza Demolition Scheduled To Start Soon

Construction will move forward to extend Ravinia Avenue and start the 9750 apartment complex.

While flowers, chocolates and candlelight dinners commonly characterize Feb. 14, the date this year marks an occasion other than Valentine’s Day in Orland Park. The village officially is in control of the west part of Orland Plaza, the former homes of Randy’s Market, Lang Lee II and the Orland Park Bakery. Next week Orland Park assumes control of the plaza up to the Gee-Schussler Insurance and Marquette Bank offices. Demolition of the west section to make room for extending Ravinia Avenue north of 143rd Street will start soon, said Orland Park Development Services Director Karie Friling. Before that begins, crews from McHugh Construction will spend about a week ridding the area of asbestos, Friling said. “Complete demolition of that …

Delusions of granduer. Very easy when you have hand picked yes people, I mean trustee's. This day has been coming for 7 or 8 years since the day the village 1st announced they were buying the Plaza well before any formal negotiations took place. Orland Plaza Businesses Moving On

With the opening of Orland Park Bakery’s new location last week, we also look at where other Plaza businesses have, or are planning to, set back up shop.

Judy Culich has been a long time regular customer of Orland Park Bakery, especially for the cinnamon raisin bread. “I can’t come home without it,” Culich said, a few minutes before she picked up her first loaf from the bakery’s new location at 14850 S. LaGrange Road. Culich, an Oak Forest resident, has been coming to the bakery since she first moved to the area in 1987, relying on the bakery not just for their skills with bread. “I’ve always gotten fabulous service here,” Culich said. “That’s one of the reasons why we get our birthday cakes here.” On Friday, she was among dozens of supporters flowing steadily in and out of the bakery, fresh goods in tow, as a grand opening at the new location was held. With the help of state and federally …
