Names in the News: A Willing and Eager Lifelong Volunteer

Rose Walsh spends much of her time helping other people at Orland Township, as well as through a volunteer group from St. Mike’s and in other ways. At age 76, she still has a lot more kindness to give.

Rose Walsh was trained, in a way, to take care of people. Born to a father in his 50s, the 40-year Orland Park resident helped care for him when he experienced ailments. She did the same for her husband Bill until he passed away in 2003, after 46 years of marriage. But she didn’t stop there. Walsh started cooking and serving food to the homeless at St. Blasé in Summit, and joined the St. Vincent of DePaul Society through St. Michael Parish. The Eucharist Ministers who work through St. Mike are assigned different people who’ve expressed a need or a hardship to the church, and the ministers help the callers with their troubles. They meet face to face, and the ministers continue to check on them in subsequent weeks and months to make sure …

Jean Oliver asked for people to pray for her daughter after a bad car accident. Her daughter still has a lot of recovery to go, though several people on Patch offered their support in comments.

It was a simple request. “That was my daughter who got smashed in the car. Please pray for her recovery,” wrote Jean Oliver. Oliver’s daughter Becca had to be extricated from a smashed up car, following an accident Wednesday on 159th Street near 80th Avenue. Following Oliver’s request, comments offering support and well wishing flooded in. Oliver then graciously offered updates on her daughter’s condition, detailing aspects of the extensive surgeries performed on Becca’s leg, arm and face. “She does have a severely bruised main nerve in her arm and does not have full function of it yet,” Oliver wrote. “She is moving her fingers a little which is awesome but that is all right now.” Oliver also expressed her appreciation for the support. “…
