The Orland Fire Protection District stopped an abandoned house fire Tuesday night without flames spreading to nearby trees.
Updated, 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, May 9 Orland firefighters faced an abandoned house fire Tuesday night, requiring 159th Street to be blocked east and west near Ravinia Avenue. Personnel from an Orland Fire Protection District company saw smoke around 159th Street west of Ravinia Avenue, and found an abandoned house in the 10100 block of West 159th Street was on fire around 9:20 p.m. "They were getting fuel nearby, saw something and headed to the house," Acting Chief Raymond Kay said from the scene. "The structure has been vacant for over 20 years. A lot of fire went through the roof so there was no possibility of safe entry." The house was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured, Kay said. The structure has not been maintained over the…

Orland Firefighters tackled a kitchen fire that left a home with smoke damage and one less pet Thursday afternoon, though no people were hurt. The Orland Fire Protection District was called about a house fire in the 10500 block of Stone Hill Drive in the mid-afternoon, by the homeowner who found the house full of smoke, according to a release from the district. Fire crews started arriving within about five minutes and found flames in the kitchen, as well as heavy smoke and heat on the second floor, according to the release. No one was home at the time, and two dogs and a cat were removed before there were harmed, but a pet chinchilla died from smoke inhalation. Read on for more Orland Fire Protection District news. James Hickey pushed for all firefighters to live in town. Kathy Passafiume wants to connect drug addicts with those who can help. And John Carmody wants the mayor’s seat.
James Hickey, president of the Orland Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, believes that requiring all Orland firefighters to live within the district’s boundaries will boost the local tax base, and make it easier to handle emergencies requiring a lot of back up. “It would help everything when you’re making everybody live within the district,” Hickey said. “We’ve brought it up, and we’ll bring it up in our union talks. Everyone thought it was a great idea.” Everyone? See what the other trustees had to say about the idea. Kathy Passafiume, the Orland Township Youth and Family Services clinical director, has seen that shame is a big reason why people don’t seek treatment for drug addictions. She and several other professionals are …

The Orland Fire Protection District board also interviewed candidates to take the helm as chief during about four-and-a-half hours in closed session, but did not make a choice Tuesday night.
Residents in the Orland Fire Protection District eager to find out who will assume the fire chief role that has been up for grabs since summer 2011 will have to wait until May. While board trustees and attorneys spent about four-and-a-half hours in closed session interviewing candidates during the monthly board meeting Tuesday night, no final decisions were made. “They are planning to make an announcement of a final candidate at the next board meeting,” said OFPD spokesman Ray Hanania, though he declined to comment on any specifics of the interview process. Board members Chris Evoy, Blair Rhode and Martin McGill also declined to comment on the interviews. Acting Fire Chief Raymond Kay was among those interviewed for the position. Comments …

Orland Fire Protection District board president James Hickey believes all fire district staff should live within the district’s boundaries, but the other trustees say there are more important issues at hand.
While the Orland Fire Protection District trustees and firefighter representatives discuss the next firefighter contract terms, a residency requirement for all new hires may arise. But that will depend if there is greater interest in the idea than there appears to be now. Board president James Hickey presented the idea that all new hires would have to move within the district after no more than a year from starting their respective jobs during a recent closed session. The point would be to beef up the local tax base with a new crop of spenders moving into the area, and it would help in an emergency if extra people needed to be called in, Hickey said to reporters after Tuesday’s board meeting. “I believe that that would help our local …

The single charge against the driver of a street sweeper that a witness said caused a three-vehicle crash in Orland Park, killing a mother, father and daughter from Tinley Park, is the traffic citation. The crash is still being investigated.
A witness to a three-vehicle accident in Orland Park Sunday night that caused the death of three Tinley Park family members told police a street sweeper ran a red light at an intersection, which led to the crash. The man driving the street sweeper has been cited with disobeying a traffic control device for running the red light, Orland Park Police Commander John Keating said Thursday. “One witness saw the whole accident in its entirety and clearly stated the street sweeper disobeyed the red light, making no attempt to stop,” Keating said. “We won’t be getting into specifics of where that witness was until the accident reconstruction is complete.” Police have held off from releasing the street sweeper driver’s name pending the crash’s …
Patricia Gira chided the Orland Fire Protection District board for not responding to questions submitted between meetings, though the board president claims they weren’t received.
Orland Park Village Trustee Patricia Gira gave the Orland Fire Protection District Board of Trustees an earful Tuesday night about citizen comments and interacting with residents at meetings. Gira first took the board to task for not getting a response to two questions she submitted in writing before Tuesday night’s meeting, per the district board’s preferred process. In June, the board put in a policy asking for at least a 48-hour notice on questions so trustees could prepare answers. “You speak of transparency in government, at the same time we have to submit questions in advance at least two days and you refuse any public conversation at a meeting,” Gira said during the meeting. “This is like attending a church service.” Gira had …

I just saw another long empty home located off Wolf rd. just north of 179th on the west side of the street. It' all boarded up and the property is in disarray. I wonder how long that one will stand. Then again I am wondering just how the fire started and do we have a fire bug in our midst? Kudos again to our fire fighters they did a fantastic job   more ›
