Local Historian Remembered for Kindness and Strong Work Ethic

Gary A. Blummer, 1949-2013, a longtime Orland Park resident, volunteer and historian, is remembered for his efforts and care for others.

ORLAND PARK, IL – Gary Blummer will be remembered for his uncanny knowledge of Orland Park history, his quiet demeanor and his willingness to help. Blummer, age 63, died from complications of pulmonary fibrosis at Palos Community Hospital on April 2. A longtime resident, Blummer moved to Orland Park as a child when he was four years old and lived in his childhood home in the original Orland Hills subdivision for 59 years. He was one of five children born to Pat and Marvin Blummer.  “I met Gary in 1974, shortly after I moved to Orland Park in ‘72,” said retired Orland Park Police Officer Tim McCarthy, owner of Paddy B’s Restaurant in Orland Park.  “When Gary moved here in 1953, Orland Park was a dust spot in south Cook County,” McCarthy …

A Walk Through Lions Club's 2012 Haunted Woods (Video)

Patch took the video camera along through the Orland Park Lions Club's 2012 Haunted Woods: A Stalk in the Park. See the chainsaws, a police car and a creepy hotel, among the other frights.

Hundreds of people came throughout the weekends leading up to Halloween to take a walk through the Orland Park Lions Club's Haunted Woods. This year's theme was built around Central Park in New York, along with a boathouse and the Park View Hotel, where the staff outside say you check in, but you might not check out. The effort requires nearly year-long planning and weeks of lengthy work among a group of dedicated volunteers. Read more about how this haunt came together. A Stalk in the Park: Haunted Woods Combines Hotel, Maze and Other New Scares

The Orland Park Lions Club expanded again on their Halloween Haunted Woods this year with a whole new theme and other creative ways to get people to scream.

A hotel, subway, boathouse and a New York police car aren’t common sights in Orland Park. But little is common about the Orland Park Lions Club’s Haunted Woods attraction either. Last year, the club added a whole new dimension to the house at the end of the woods trail, with a maze entirely in the dark, use of black lights to make a room full of doll heads appear out of the darkness, walls that literally closed in on people and other mind trickery. “The path might be the same, but we’re trying to create a different scene and atmosphere each year,” said Scott Copeland, of the Orland Park Lions Club and Prepared to Scare Productions. “The community has embraced us as an affordable haunt, and in return we want to give them a show.” Sign up …

Being scared can be a lot of fun.  And thanks to a great deal of hard work put in by the Orland Park Lions Club, as well as several local students, it's possible to get scared right here in Orland Park. For the past 22 years, the Lions Club has put on the Haunted Woods, now in the trees just south of the Orland Park Civic Center. Two years ago, they incorporated the whole front end of a 1955 Chevrolet into the haunt. Last year, they took attendees on a sensory journey, with walls that closed in, and a creepy room with doll heads (which can be seen in the attached video). Enter our drawing by filling out the above form, and find out for yourself what's so scary this year in the Stalk in the Park. We will be picking four winners, who will …
