This week, Tina looks back (and forward) at the highs and lows of fitness trends over the years.
Fitness is a multi-billion dollar industry that produces a continual stream of fads and trends. History has a way of repeating itself, and many of these fads get resurrected decades later – even when they did not work the first time. But we still search for that magical bullet – the surefire way to finally lose weight and get buff. Who knows what the future has in store for the fitness world? What if someone told you that by taking a magic pill daily, you'd have no need to exercise? Would you trust them? Would you do it? Because some of the past fads in fitness are not that far off from a magic pill, consider the "passive exercise" trend. The Vibrating Belt machine & Gloria Marshall's Figure Salons I can clearly remember my aunt's …

In this week's Fit Life, Tina talks about the pros and cons of different exercise styles, and how different classes fit different needs.

This week, Tina tries out the Pilates Reformer machine program at the Orland Park Sportsplex.
"In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you'll have a whole new body." – Joseph Pilates I've heard that mantra many times, but I've always been skeptical. That's it? Thirty sessions? Visions of looking like Kim Kardashian flash through my deluded mind when I hear that claim, but only for a second. I have taken Pilates mat classes, and they certainly strengthened my core. But in my mind, running 6 miles, lifting 30-pound weights and lunging a zillion times would be more effective. As a personal trainer, affectionately nicknamed "Sgt. Brutal" by many clients, I think I've earned the right to be skeptical. I like to work out hard, sweat and feel the burn. Endorphins intoxicate me. Maybe the …
