Sandburg math teacher and public address man Mark Peterson asked fans to stand and join in a moment of silence in memory of the late-Bruce Scheidegger before the opening tip of the Eagles' basketball game vs. Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night in Orland Park. H-F scored a 52-36 victory and raised its record to 19-5. A celebration of the life of Scheidegger will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in the Eagle Gym at Sandburg High School. Afterward, light refreshments will be served in the commons. Scheidegger, 54, was found dead Sunday, Feb. 10, after a single-car accident in Carroll County, southwest of Freeport. Joliet West 59, Sandburg 41: Ryan Modiest drained five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 19 points as the Tigers topped the Eagles Friday in Orland Park.

Ryan Modiest was playing 3-ball and calling his pocket in Joliet West’s 59-41 boys basketball victory over Sandburg on Friday night in Orland Park. Modiest knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter—five in the game—and went on to score a career-high 19 points as the Tigers led from start-to-finish on a night when two of the area’s big guns took a back seat to the zone-busting shooting of Modiest. Athlete of the Month: Sandburg's Ruzevich Scores High Marks

Sandburg girls basketball standout Rachel Ruzevich has made herself right at home in the land of giants during her senior year. Her unselfish move has helped the Eagles bounce back from a slow start.

Honor roll student. High basketball IQ. One doesn’t necessarily go with the other. Sandburg’s Rachel Ruzevich is one of those rare individuals who scores all A’s on and off the court. She first learned to play the game from her father, Joe. He coached her from the time she started playing organized basketball through eighth grade. Ruzevich has turned back to those early lessons to help her play out of position during her senior year at Sandburg. She is the 5-foot-8 guard who has sacrificed personal glory for the good of the Eagles’ team.
