Fans observed a moment of silence in memory of the late-Bruce Scheidegger before Sandburg's boys basketball game vs. Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night in Orland Park.
Sandburg math teacher and public address man Mark Peterson asked fans to stand and join in a moment of silence in memory of the late-Bruce Scheidegger before the opening tip of the Eagles' basketball game vs. Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night in Orland Park. H-F scored a 52-36 victory and raised its record to 19-5. A celebration of the life of Scheidegger will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in the Eagle Gym at Sandburg High School. Afterward, light refreshments will be served in the commons. Scheidegger, 54, was found dead Sunday, Feb. 10, after a single-car accident in Carroll County, southwest of Freeport. He was in the area to attend the IHSA girls state bowling tournament. Scheidegger served as Sandburg’s athletic director …

Homewood-Flossmoor 52, Sandburg 36: Rashaan Surles made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points as the Vikings throttled the Eagles in Orland Park on Friday night.
The Skinny: Two starters sat out and a third—Rashaan Surles—came off the bench two-thirds of the way through the first quarter in Homewood-Flossmoor’s 52-36 boys basketball victory over Sandburg on Friday night in Orland Park. And when Surles came off the bench, he brought instant firepower to the Vikings’ attack. He poured in four 3-pointers and scored 18 points to lead an H-F team that experimented with some new rotations in the absence of Lamar Wofford-Humphery (season-ending ankle injury) and Thaddeus Little (dislocated toe). Tai Odiase added 11 points as H-F built leads of 7-0 and 21-4 in the early going on Senior Night at Sandburg. The Eagle faithful observed a moment of silence before the opening tip-off in memory of the late-Bruce …

Joliet West 59, Sandburg 41: Ryan Modiest drained five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 19 points as the Tigers topped the Eagles Friday in Orland Park.
The Skinny: The game might as well have been billiards. Ryan Modiest was playing 3-ball and calling his pocket in Joliet West’s 59-41 boys basketball victory over Sandburg on Friday night in Orland Park. Modiest knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter—five in the game—and went on to score a career-high 19 points as the Tigers led from start-to-finish on a night when two of the area’s big guns took a back seat to the zone-busting shooting of Modiest. Joliet West’s Morris Dunnigan—a four-year starter—played a complementary role for the Tigers with 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Sandburg’s Malek Harris—touted as a potential Division I recruit—scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the first half. He kept the Eagles …

Sandburg girls basketball standout Rachel Ruzevich has made herself right at home in the land of giants during her senior year. Her unselfish move has helped the Eagles bounce back from a slow start.
Honor roll student. High basketball IQ. One doesn’t necessarily go with the other. Sandburg’s Rachel Ruzevich is one of those rare individuals who scores all A’s on and off the court. She first learned to play the game from her father, Joe. He coached her from the time she started playing organized basketball through eighth grade. Ruzevich has turned back to those early lessons to help her play out of position during her senior year at Sandburg. She is the 5-foot-8 guard who has sacrificed personal glory for the good of the Eagles’ team. She is also the girl with a plan of action in place that likely will set her up for a lifetime of success. Ruzevich, Southland Patch’s Athlete of the Month for December, will study to become an …

The acknowledgement and the moment of silence at the game were a very nice gesture and tribute to Bruce. The loss is still sinking in.   more ›
