Photo Gallery: St. Xavier University December Graduation

Another class passes through the gates of St. Xavier University.

Another class was preparing to leave the halls of St. Xavier University. Student speaker Jade Lewis adjusted her motorboard then sat down to go over her speech.  It was time. Over 700 graduates from the St. Xavier College of Arts and Sciences, Graham School of Management, School of Education, School of Nursing and School for Continuing and Professional studies received their degrees. President Christine Wiseman presented Joseph Parisi with an Honorary Degree from St. Xavier. Parisi then made the commencement address.  Sign up for Orland Park Patch breaking news alerts. St. Xavier Cougars Celebrate National Fooball Championship

After its best year yet, the St. Xavier football team and coach Mike Feminis celebrated the school’s first national football title Tuesday.

It’s not everyday that you see a football coach get sentimental when talking about the game. But sentiment was part of a range of emotions St. Xavier University football coach Mike Feminis and his assistants felt watching the Cougars take home their first NAIA national title on Dec. 17. Feminis, his coaches and the team were honored by administration, local politicians and supporters in an assembly Tuesday at St. Xavier’s Shannon Center. The head coach, who was named NAIA Coach of the Year, wasn’t shy, nor was he selling himself short when he said his team would bring back a national championship. “Before we left for Rome, Georgia, a lot of people told me I was crazy, because I guaranteed a win,” he told the crowd. “I’m going to make one …

Wagers, Parties Mark Saint Xavier's Big Game

Congressional trash talk and parties planned for Saint Xavier's NAIA championship game that will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

If the Chicago Bears have let you down then grab a barstool and turn your eyes toward another champion in the making right in our own backyard. For the first time in school history, Saint Xavier University has advanced to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Football National Championship. The Cougars take on Carroll College in a game that will be televised on the CBS Sports Network starting at 3:30 p.m. CST on Saturday. To make things more interesting, Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) has placed a friendly wager with Congressman Denny Rehberg (MT) on the outcome of Saturday’s National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Football National Championship. If the Saint Xavier Cougars defeat six-time champion Carroll …

SXU Stuttering Expert Applauds ‘King's Speech’

A Saint Xavier associate professor who helps clients find their voice is impressed by the Oscar-nominated movie's portrayal of stuttering.

When Colin Firth, in his portrayal of King George VI in The King’s Speech, stepped before a radio microphone and saw the sea of faces before him only to stammer his way through his closing speech to the British Empire Exhibition in 1925, Karen Czarnik clutched herself. An associate professor of communication disorders and a stuttering expert at Saint Xavier University, Czarnik suddenly felt the pain, anxiety and shame experienced by her clients who stutter. “It went through my heart,” Czarnik said. Nominated for a slew of Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best actor, The King’s Speech is the true story of Prince Albert, the Duke of York (Queen Elizabeth’s father), a life-long stutterer who found himself thrust …

I agree with Gloria's comment about the Stuttering Foundation but want to expand. The website of this nonprfoit organization (www.stutteringhelp.org) offers awesome (and free!) resources that are numerous and diverse. I just want to put in my two cents and say that there is a Spanish-language version of the Stuttering Foundation's website at www.tartamudez.org so that the same resources can be …   more ›
