Orland School District 135’s choice for superintendent is coming from Hinsdale to take over in Orland. "I think D135 has an excellent reputation," Stutz said Thursday. "We've lived in Aurora for 26 years, our kids are grown and we're ready for a change. It's a wonderful opportunity and we're excited about it." Update, 5:58 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 Schools within Orland School District 135 will soon be getting a technological boost, thanks to an anonymous private donation of $18,000. The money will go toward adding 40 new iPad Minis and 40 Apple TV units to be used by teachers in lessons. Apple TVs allow images on iPad screens to be projected for all students and participants to see. “It is a more accessible and portable system to use than other projection tools,” said Dan Doogan, the district’s technology coordinator and supervisor. “Both the iPads and Apple TVs can all be used in every one of our buildings.” The district will put four iPads and Apple TVs in each school, with one pairing set aside for special education use, said D135 Asst. …

Orland School District 135 board member Mary Bragg called for president John Carmody to leave the board, citing a violation of board policy about conversations between board members.
Orland School District 135 Board Member Mary Bragg called for Board President John Carmody to resign at the Nov. 12 meeting, claiming he violated a board policy about communication between board members. The District 135 board narrowed down its list of candidates for a permanent superintendent after a series of interviews recently. Though not all members have been included on conversations about the candidates, according to Bragg. “Too many times we have walked into public meetings without the proper information to be prepared for the meeting discussion,” Bragg said. “The board president is responsible for making sure all members are all informed. He doesn’t keep all board members informed. He calls his quorum buddies on the board and …

Former Supt. Dennis Soustek was hired Monday to oversee the search for a new superintendent for School District 135. Soustek, who served as superintendent from 2006 to 2010 and again from January to June of this year, will be paid $60 per hour to screen applications, check references, and to make sure the candidates meet the criteria established by the district. He said he would work a maximum of 100 hours on the search. “Actually, it will probably be closer to 50 hours by the time it’s all over,” he said. “I will help them in the search process as much or as little as they want me to,” Soustek said after Monday’s school board meeting. The board hired Soustek in part because Dr. Carol Kunst, who is acting as interim superintendent, is …

The Orland School District 135 Board of Education discussed terms of taking on former superintendent Dennis Soustek as consultant for their permanent superintendent search during Monday's committee meeting. Board members also looked over the new budget.
They just can’t keep Dennis Soustek away. Orland School District 135 board members want to keep the former superintendent working as a consultant while they seek a permament superintendent to helm the district. Soustek was superintendent from 2006 to 2010. He came out of retirement in January to work as interim superintendent after Paul Howell moved back to the curriculum department. Soustek worked just under the maximum 100 business days between January and June, and considered serving as acting super for another 100-day stint after the board was not able to hire a permanent superintendent by July. He declined and the board hired Carol Kunst in June as interim superintendent. But since Kunst plans on applying for the permanent position, …

Update, 2:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012 Applications are now being accepted for a permanent Orland School District 135 superintendent. Board members will be vetting each candidate, though a few stipulations were added to focus the search. The job ad requires five years of elementary school administration. During Monday night's meeting, board member Tom Cunningham questioned the need for such a requirement, noting that when Dennis Soustek was originally hired as superintendent, his qualifications were different than what the board at the time was looking for. Soustek, as well as board member Mary Bragg and Assistant Superintendent of Buisness Services John Reiniche, said elementary experience can't be duplicated and would be key for the …

An electronic survey is now available for school district parents and residents to offer feedback on what they want in a head administrator.
Orland School District 135 is looking for input from parents and residents as they begin searching for a permanent superintendent. Posted on the district’s website Thursday is an electronic survey from the Illinois Associations of School Boards, where people are encouraged to add their thoughts on a proper head administrator. Take the superintendent survey here. Four questions are multiple choice, with one asking for five top desired aspects of a new superintendent out of a list of 15. A space is at the bottom for written comments. The school board formally hired the IASB to help with the superintendent search at Monday’s special meeting at a cost not to top $8,000. Wow! One should not be so comfortable with this sudden coming together. Your question should be WHY? Why leave a nice job in Hinsdale (great schools), for the turmoils of a contentious board, outstanding lawsuit/problems and extremely low morale of staff and teachers caused by some of the top administration? WHAT happened in Aurora or Hinsdale that a person would run to this mess where the Board …   more ›
