The sold out race welcomed over 700 participants, including Sandburg running star and Olympic triathlete hopeful Lukas Verzbicas, four months after doctors told him he may never walk again after a serious biking accident.
Over 700 runners took their place on Ravinia Avenue Thursday morning prepared to tackle the 2.5 mile cross country path of Orland Park's annual Turkey Trot. The race is a tradition for many Orland Park families, as well as families from surrounding communities. One participant, rising Olympian hopeful and Sandburg alum Lukas Verzbicas, overcame unimaginable odds to run in his first race since enduring serious spinal injuries in July while biking. "I am thankful to get that competitive feeling again," said Verzbicas. "This is something I was born to do and to be feeling this again after all that has happened, I am really appreciative of that." Orland Township’s Youth Commission spent their November meeting assembling Thanksgiving food packages for area people in need.
Jimmy Gradowski found that spending some of his free time away from school working on community service projects was fun. The Carl Sandburg High School sophomore joined the Orland Township Youth Commission about a year and a half ago, at the behest of Aaron Grudowski, another avid commission member. Gradowski was interested in earning the Cook County Sheriff’s Office Youth Service Medal, a distinction given to teens participating in community service. But in time, he found other reasons to keep attending the monthly commission meetings. “This was a way to have fun doing the work,” Gradowski said. “There are great experiences to be had. To help prevent home fires this Thanksgiving, the Red Cross suggests the following tips: Even with the best preparation and precautions, accidents can happen. Thanksgiving is high time for cooking related burns. Minor burns can be treated easily if you remember to save the butter for the rolls and not a burn. For a superficial burn, cool the area by running it under cold water until the heat eases and then loosely cover the burn with a sterile dressing.
