Children in the Village of Orland Park’s pre-school program donned red, white and blue clothing in honor of the country’s veterans.
Teachers and administrators for Orland Park’s pre-school program thought their students should learn why U.S. Armed Forces Veterans are important. To honor relatives of the program’s staff serving in the armed forces, the program asked children’s parents to dress them in reds, whites and blues to pose as an American Flag. “We explained it to them that just as our police officers protect Orland Park, the Armed Forces protect the whole country,” said Program Director Roberta Flondor. “We want the kids to start understanding why veterans are important, and should be respected.” Five classes of the 4 and 5-year-old students came Friday to the Franklin Loebe Center, dressed to fill the red, white and blue of the American Flag, with the blues …

Fourteen new names added to Orland Park’s Veterans Memorial during Friday’s Veterans Day ceremony.
Abby Olivieri appreciates the honor her brother has received, despite the circumstances. Private First Class Michael C. Olivieri was killed in June at an American base in Iraq. He was a field artillery data systems operator in the 1st Infantry Division, and was 26 when he died. “It’s hard to be part of this but at the same time it’s nice to honor what he did, even though it can be really difficult,” Abby Olivieri said Friday. “This is our first Veterans Day without him.” Pfc. Michael Olivieri was among 14 veterans who have been added to the Orland Park Veterans Memorial. Several of Olivieri’s family members, along with dozens of veterans and supporters, honored their loved ones during Orland Park’s Veterans Day ceremony on Friday. …

With Veterans Day approaching, the U.S. Census Bureau compiled a slew of facts and information about the holiday, beginning with how the day was established. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation. A national ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
