We look back on a couple battles in May that appear to have tilted the balance to one of our three food-challenging Patch towns.
Each Monday, our Chowdown Showdown takes three local restaurants – one in Tinley Park, one in Orland Park and one in Oak Forest – and pits their versions of a specific dish against each other to find the best between the three. This week we're giving our blood sugar levels a brief rest, and looking back on where we are at in the standings. Going into May, it was all tied with Mickey’s in Oak Forest winning the Gyros challenge, Diana’s Kitchen of Tinley Park triumphing in battle Hot Dog and last but far from least, Orland Park getting on the board with Burrito Jalisco putting forth the best chicken and steak tacos. In this week's Chowdown Showdown, we look for the best spicy-sauced, crispy bird arms and legs.
The little bright red suckers are everywhere. From simple Chicago-style stands, marked by the yellow Vienna Beef signs, to top shelf steak houses, a huge array of restaurants around the country have made their own take on deep-fried chicken wings and drumsticks, soused in peppery awesome…sauce. A few faithful readers asked for wings, and we (gladly) obliged. We’ll be judging on crispiness of the outside, how spot-on the chicken is cooked (too much leaves it tough and dry, too little leaves it gummy and chewy) and taste of the sauce. Some places make breaded wings while others “go naked” so in the interest of letting the restaurants do their regular thing, we didn’t ask for a choice if we weren’t offered.
