Man Caught Trying to Open Car Roof with Knife

An Orland Park man is also accused of stealing from several cars in the village and in nearby unincorporated Cook County Wednesday morning.

A 21-year-old Orland Park man is facing felony charges after he was seen cutting open a Jeep’s roof, and was later caught with stolen items from other car burglaries, according to police.

The Orland Park Police Department was called about a man seen in the 14000 block of Timothy Drive using a knife to cut open the roof of a Jeep Wrangler around 6:07 a.m., according to a release.

The man ran from the area when the caller approached him, and responding officers chased him on foot, police said.

Officers caught him at the Michael Drive and Sheri Lane intersection. Police found items on him stolen from at least six other vehicles in Orland Park, and others in unincorporated Cook County, according to the release. The other burglaries also happened early Wednesday morning.

Nicholas J. Fountas, 21, of the 14100 block of Trenton Avenue in Orland Park, was charged with felony criminal damage to property, felony burglary to motor vehicle and resisting a police officer.

Judge Carmen Aguilar set bail at $10,000 Wednesday morning at the Bridgeview courthouse, and he’s scheduled to be in court next on June 6.

One Orland Park police officer was injured during the chase, while trying to jump a fence.
