Update: 10:08 a.m. Monday

Will County Sheriff's Police reported that the child had wandered over to the in-ground swimming pool at the house next door to where he and his family had been visiting.

The property owner at 13311 Chicago-Bloomington Road discovered the child and began CPR. Sheriff's deputies took over CPR upon their arrival.

Will County Deputy Sheriff Ken Kaupus said, the neighbor had used the pool the night before, and while the pool was gated, the gate may have been left open.

"No one is certain how long the child had been in the water," he said.

Kaupus said statistics show two children drown every day in the United States.

Nathan Kackert, 3, who drowned the morning of July 7 in a Homer Glen swimming pool, is the son of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Shaun and Linda Kackert. The boy's father is scheduled for deployment to Afghanistan early next year.

He is currently on leave from Fort Carson near Colorado Springs.

The child's grandfather, Don Kackert, told Patch that while on leave, his son's family came home for the holiday to visit family on both sides before his deployment.

"This has been an unspeakable tragedy for our entire family," said Nathan's grandfather.
