Football: Sandburg Prevails in Home Opener Battle Against Andrew

The Sandburg Eagles waged an evenly matched attack against the Andrew Thunderbolts, but in the end Sandburg won the war, 42-35.

In the war for Parks supremacy, Sandburg won the latest battle Friday night.

The Carl Sandburg High School Eagles took on the Victor J. Andrew Thunderbolts at Sandburg’s home opener in Orland Park and won 42-35.

The two teams matched each other play by play, keeping the score within two touchdowns at its broadest, but only for a brief period. Mostly throughout the game, each team answered touchdowns with cross the goal line themselves.

Starting off with LaVelle Johnson connecting on the first pass thrown by quarterback Sean Leland 64 yards for a touchdown, Sandburg continued to hold Andrew at bay throughout the first half at a score of 28-14. Four solid drives in the first half included a good mix of set ups through quick passes and runs, including a set up by Dennis Bresingham right before one of the touchdowns.

But similar to last week’s loss against Lincoln-Way Central, the lead dissolved with Andrew’s quarterback Jason Platt and running back Jarvion Franklin pushing back hard to bring the score to 35-28 by the end of the third quarter.

Sandburg’s Aidan Muno-Kuhn and Brian Langowski scored while dodging and pushing through several Thunderbolts, helping to bring the game back to a tie and then to win with less than a minute to play.
